This bear was pounding on my basement door this morning at 4am. I was awake and it made quite a commotion. I watched it with a flashlight wander around on my back lawn after it left the porch for 5 minutes sniffing the ground and looking for something to eat. It also chewed and scratched one of the porch posts. I got 4 - 30 second videos from my security camera but this is a screen shot of him as I haven't figured out how to reduce the videos so I can send them. The videos are much better... The VT Senate Committee on Natural Resources moved S.258 out to the full senate. If you're a VTer of voting age, you should reach out to your Senator to ask the to oppose this legislation that would change the make up of the F&W Board, among other things. This is a move to change how wildlife is managed in the state. Your best action is to call and leave your Senator a message via the Sgt At Arms - 802-828-2228 Next best is to write them a personalized email - (Find them here -... Read more ..read more

Not a hunting related question. My wife wants to go to Vermont in July as we have never been. I said no way so I'm looking for some information when we go to Vermont in July. Really have no idea where to go. Basic sightseeing/touristy things. She mentioned the Burlington area but I'm thinking the Burlington/Shelburn/Champlain Islands/Stowe region? Honestly really have no idea. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated ..read more

Anyone know them? I remember 25 years ago seeing some of the deer they brought in. They were always good for a fat racked, 200 pounder every year or 2. I think they used to hunt up around Norton or something. Anyway, one of them won the buck pool at Ste Marie's this year. Heck of a deer. I have a photo, but don't want to post it if they are a member on here ..read more

Yesterday morning (Wednesday - rifle season day 5) we went up in the mountains. At the base there was little to no snow...but as we went up it started to increase and at 2000 feet there was a good 3 inches. Picked up a couple smoking fresh doe tracks going up and started following them. Then saw a buck was following them but not always right on their tracks...he was veering off here and there. I was moving slow...sneaking and peaking expecting to see him at him any moment. I probably wasn't... Read more ..read more

On Sunday evening we moved to our friends camp in Guildhall. You may remember that last year my friend took a beautiful 8pt here. Two guys in camp when we arrived, the owner and his longtime good friend Ron. Some background on Ron. He’s 67, blind in one eye, very hard of hearing. He’s hard a hard life, was a heavy equipment and municipal bus mechanic and that work took a toll on his health. He’s riddled with arthritis, hobbles when he walks and has poor balance, plus he’s a smoker and gets... Read more ..read more

I had to work all weekend. After house chores done on Monday afternoon I was excited to make my way out to the stand. My apple orchard wad depleted of apples only Kale stems left in the garden from a herd a does I saw coming in the night before. 50 yards behind the house I started still hunting as they have been known to stick around and there is scrapes and rubs all around. I stopped and admired the fresh scrape underneath the 10 yr old Chestnut tree. I start making bleat calls... Read more ..read more

Probably my favorite weekend of the year is the VT rifle season opener. I have been attending the same camp for going on 20 years now and for the last two my son has joined me. As members of camp have raised a few boys our number has now swelled to 9 and spans three generations. Saturday morning we rolled out of ours bunks and cots early to make some of the long hikes we have ahead us to our favorite hunting spots. I always have a bit of anxiety about how well my 10-year-old will do as we... Read more ..read more

Goals for the season

Hey guys, Curious if you have goals for the season and if so, what they are? My goals are to shoot a legal buck, explore some new areas and to try and enjoy myself. I haven't shot many deer in my life so I'm not gonna be picky. Gotta get some experience under my belt before I start passing on deer haha. Someday I'd like to shoot a 200lber to make my dad proud it won't be this year. I usually hunt the same spots. I've never hunted outside of zone G. I would like to try to branch out some...
