The 80’s were very busy in my personal and business life. I was now trying to balance home life, which consisted of three children and my husband, with the ongoing pressure of running a business. I hired a live-in nanny, which I couldn’t do without as I was travelling so often for work. Whenever I would travel, I would leave David a huge list of all the kid’s extra activities after school; he was amazing driving them everywhere and appreciating me even more when I got home! Now, of course, my children are all grown up in their 30’s, and I have a dear little granddaughter, Piper, who I can spen ..read more

As the demand grew for my wedding dresses and blouses, I was finding it hard to keep up with the supply of antique lace. Working with antique lace brought me so much joy, but it came with its challenges; namely the limited supply! One very lucky day I got a phone call from a woman in Toronto who had a garage full of lace for sale!
Her father was a jobber in the 1930’s and had boxes of lace, buttons, trims, appliques and embroideries that all matched! You can imagine the excitement running through my body on the other end of the phone. I flew to Toronto and spent the day going through ju ..read more

Selena Katharine was born on October 25, and we brought her home on a snowy Halloween. David set off a mountain of fireworks in the front yard to celebrate, which became a tradition from then on. All our friends came over to see the newest addition to our family!
I discovered a new side to my creativity when I was pregnant. I made a beautiful nursery with antique lace over her crib and had Suzanne Blunt paint rainbows and candies on the walls; stars and a moon on the ceiling too! Suzanna later painted portraits of all my children, which I still love. I felt so honored, Suzanna recentl ..read more

I returned from Italy inspired and ready to get back to work. However, my boyfriend, David, had other ideas. He had missed me terribly and was not wanting me to disappear to Italy again. He proposed on New Year’s Eve, and I decided that he was the one. Of course, New Year’s Day I panicked and tried to get out of it, however he flatly refused to let me go. It turned out to be the best decision of my life. (For more details of our crazy romance read an earlier blog, Our Love Story.)
I planned the wedding of my dreams. I chose St John’s Shaughnessy to be married in, a beautiful old church with ..read more

By 1985 I was getting some wonderful articles in magazines across the continent. The editorial shown here was in the November issue of City and Country Home, it was shot at the Parkwood mansion in Oshawa, Ontario. Featured are the beautiful antique beaded Whimsical Wraps that I was becoming known for.
Alongside the Whimsical Wrap, a silk crepe de chine gown in pale wisteria with a matching robe and dripping with antique lace. An aubergine gown with lace godets trailing down each side, matching lace on the cuffs of the wrap. A soft pink teddy and kimono with Swiss embroidered lace an ..read more

In 1975 fellow designer Zonda Nellis and I decided to participate in the Renaissance Fair in California. This took place in the hills above Sausalito and lasted for the two months of August and September, weekends only. There were five stages, performers everywhere, and everyone dressed the part. Attendance was about 100k people every weekend, it was an amazing time! We built the most beautiful booth which won an award, where we were paraded up to the stage to receive. Our designs were celebrated, and we met some great contacts.
A place I was thrilled to find was a sil ..read more

In 1981 I decided to take my first long holiday since starting my business and went to Italy. I travelled with a friend and stayed in an ancient building on the edge of the Piazza Navona, in Rome. I remember the stones steps going up to our apartment were worn deeply away from the passage of time, countless footsteps from endless bodies traipsing up these steps. The Italian families would gather every evening in the piazza around the fountain and enjoy each other’s company, it was a real sense of community. It seemed like a lovely pace of life.
A friend of mine, Zonda Nellis (ano ..read more

In the early 1980s, I met Sandy Cameron and Terry Schindler, who became long-time friends. They were closing down their manufacturing business, Christopher Ryan, and had a few professional seamstresses who did piecework. I immediately hired them and downsized my in-house operation, as I had been feeling overwhelmed organizing so many people. This allowed us to move to a cottage industry style production. Hilda Fassas and Maria de Silva, both talented seamstresses, began producing my Victorian-style blouses with millions of pin tucks and antique lace. This completely transformed my business; I ..read more

Andrew, Selena, myself, and little Izzy.
In celebration of her birthday, our founder and creator, the Christine behind Christine, shares the joyful tale of her very own tree of life, The Cherry Tree. A cherry tree that she and her husband planted at the beginning of their journey as new parents that would become a special part of a birthday tradition, each and every year…
We bought our house 37 years ago when I was pregnant with our first child, Selena. The front garden was quite bare so in celebration of her birth we bought a cherry tree. Little did we know how much joy and entertainment we ..read more

I began my business in 1972 with Jackie Warnock. We got a contract to make raggedy Anne and raggedy Andy costumes for all the Eaton’s stores Santa’s helpers across Canada. We made dresses, pinafores and bloomers for the girls and knickers with suspenders and shirts for the boys. We didn’t have a serger so they were all made with French seams on our domestic sewing machines. The wigs kept us up late at night wrapping red yarn around a pole and crazy gluing it on to a mesh skull cap. They were great and they lasted for years.
That Christmas we decided to participate in the Circle Craft Fair. It ..read more
