Dear Folks, As I write this, I’ve just finished doing the second of today’s interviews about THE LAND OF LOST THINGS, with more to follow. (I remarked to a friend that I was concerned about boring myself, to which he replied that at least I’d know how everyone else felt. He is no longer my friend.) I sometimes wonder whether writers should do interviews about their work, because it may risk cutting the lark’s throat to see how it sings. Then again, while we might like to think that a book can speak for itself, interviews at least allow us to explain where it came from, as well as convince peop ..read more

Dear Folks, First of all, apologies for the slight delay in getting the newsletter out, but we were trying to nail down final dates for Irish signings. Consider it delayed gratification, albeit on a very small scale… So where did June go? More to the point, where is my life going, and can I have some of it back, please? To be honest, June hasn’t been the greatest of months, so I’m happy to see it receding into the distance. Among other things, I finally succumbed to the dreaded lurgy, after two-and-a-bit years of dodging it, like a soldier evading sniper fire while his comrades fall by the way ..read more

Dear Folks, Some years ago, a newspaper article once described me as “not quite reclusive, but keeps himself to himself.” After two years of COVID, and counting, that could probably describe most of us—although is it terrible to say that I quite liked some of lockdown? I admit that I sometimes find it hard to balance the private and public sides of what I do: the requirement to write – even, more properly the need to do so – versus the task of publicizing the products of that writing. To write requires solitude, which may be why I made so much progress on projects during COVID, but the promoti ..read more

Dear Folks, I know it’s only been a few weeks since you’ve heard from me but, darn it, I just can’t quit you. Blame yourselves for being so lovable. Also, we do have some bits and pieces of news that might be of interest, which always helps. I wouldn’t want you to think that I’m needy. Well, not just needy . . . SHADOW VOICES finds an audience We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in the Republic of Ireland, but it feels appropriate to thank the booksellers and readers who have supported the launch of SHADOW VOICES: 300 Years of Irish Genre Fiction, A History in Stories. It was lovely to see everyo ..read more

Dear Folks, Apologies for getting in touch again so soon after our last little rendezvous (*assumes coquettish pose, puts little finger of right hand to bottom lip, gets moved along by the police*), but it’s just one of those times, given that this week sees not one but two new books hit the shelves, one with considerably more heft than the other, considering its size, although both are much loved. All of which is to say that just because I’m reaching out again shouldn’t lead you to assume that I’m stalking you, going through your bins, watching you last thing at night, or inspecting your home ..read more

Dear Folks, I recently bumped into an acquaintance on the street who asked, in passing, if I was still "scribbling away," reminding me of a wedding I attended as a guest many years ago, when I was working as a journalist with the Irish Times. The bride was from a very wealthy family, whose senior members formed a receiving line at the door of their massive country pile, there to greet the invitees with varying degrees of enthusiasm. As I approached the mother of the bride, I was introduced as "X’s boyfriend," to which the MOTB replied, with no small amount of disdain, "Oh, the scribbler ..read more

Dear Folks, Where has the year gone? In fact, where have the last 18 months gone, and do we get some kind of credit for them down the line? Because frankly, they weren’t up to very much, even if I did manage to finish off a passion project in the absence of anything else to do, of which more anon. So, God, if You’re listening, maybe You could see about tossing a few boons our way. Most of us have tried our best, but we’ve taken a few knocks, and we’re feeling a bit tender. Whatever You can do. Oh, and thanks for giving us wine. That helped. Amen. Anyway, if you, gentle readers, are looking for ..read more

Dear Folks, April’s sweet showers have pierced March’s drought, to paraphrase Geoffrey Chaucer (that English degree wasn’t wasted), and May is on the way, bringing with it my 55th birthday. I know, how do I stay so young and pretty? Well, dim lighting helps, as well as not wearing my glasses when I look in the mirror. Denial also works. Funnily enough, my publishers recently suggested that now might be the time to get some new author photos taken, but I’ve been a bit resistant. Apart from reminding me of the passing of the years, I’m very fond of the one that features on most of my hardbacks ..read more

Dear Folks, Well, in this part of the world at least, the sun seems to be shining a little brighter, just in time to glint invitingly upon a vaccination needle. From next week, browsing in bookstores without impediment will be possible, and for that small pleasure I am very grateful. And speaking of browsing in bookstores . . . THE DIRTY SOUTH’s campaign of world domination For much of the world today is just another Tuesday, but in the United States and Canada joy shall be abounding, for THE DIRTY SOUTH is now available in trade paperback from your favorite bookseller. Unlike my UK publisher ..read more

Dear Folks, As some of you may have spotted on social media, I’m ending this year an honest man, Jennie having finally consented to marriage, if only to spare someone else the burden of taking me on. To those of you who sent congratulations, many thanks; to those of you who pointed out that I’m punching above my weight, kind of thanks; and to those of you wondering about the identity of the old guy in the pictures, don’t you have somewhere else you need to be? Apart from that, I’m currently deep into the second year of my PhD, which has turned out to be rather more work than I’d anticipated, e ..read more
