Remember to switch it Off!   The main purpose for training Siu Lim Tau is the development of energy, or to be more precise, two types of energy, elbow energy in the first section, explosive energy throughout the rest of the Form.   We are all aware of the need to build energy, and […] The post Switch It Off appeared first on Wingchun Online ..read more

This is early stages now, but will likely be the third week in January, and for seven nights. Yes, this was initially mentioned as November this year, but as it’s a busy work time for many, I have decided to put this back a little, also giving more time for preparing. When I have had the chance to let everyone know and time to return their interest, I will book, then release my trip details, then expect you to b ..read more

What’s YOUR reason for learning Wing Chun?   It’s been quite a while since I have posted a blog, but after a conversation during one of our livestream classes, I was encouraged to share this clip openly.   I guess this post is mainly for those people who think Wing Chun can not be studied online, or for those students who are with us already but may have future concerns regarding not having a partner   Of course this does all depend on your reason for learning in the first place, reasons which change as you mature in life, and in your training needs.   I am sur ..read more

A bit of a tenuous link actually, if I’m honest.   Over the last week I have had the greatest pleasure in giving seminars over in Pennsylvania, at Lancaster Wing Chun (oh, and if you are in that area, I do recommend you get make contact).   There, I met with a wonderful group of practitioners, all training with the same goals in mind and all enjoying their journey, mostly encouraged (of which I am certain), by the guidance of their teacher, Nick Stephens. It was a joy for me to meet with faces I had seen MANY times before, but only through our livestream classes at WingC ..read more

Keep your chin up (Photo by Alexander Krivitskiy)   When people talk about fighting, a key point often raised, is that of keeping your chin tucked in, so why am I saying to keep it up? If this concept is difficult to understand, then maybe, do not think so much of keeping your chin up, but of keeping it back, out of the way.   Grandmaster Ip Chun often made me giggle when, after he would perform a good Bong Sau, then, would then lean his head forward, as if peeking around the corner, at which time he would make a childlike noise, as if playing peek-a-boo. This noise would alw ..read more

How To Use Chi Sau In A Fight

Chi Sau with my Sifu, Grandmaster Ip Chun     Question: When will I use my Chi Sau in a real fight?   Answer: Hopefully never   Now I do not mean that to sound like a feeble general sweeping statement by way of keeping you safe, but instead a genuine answer, as this kind of connection between Chi Sau and a fight, should be so far down the line when entering any confrontation. To understand what I mean let’s first look at the practical side of Chi Sau.   The reason for playing this game is to work sensitivity, relaxation, to gain the ability to read body mechani ..read more

Wing Chun’s Rule Of Three
Wing Chun Online Blog

It’s everywhere in Wing Chun   I always seem to come back to this, but then I guess I would, I mean, we are talking about Wing Chun aren’t we?   The number 3 pops up all the time throughout the Wing Chun system, a lucky number in Chinese culture, the number of hand forms, the number of sections, basic hand positions, and so on…   But the rule of three appears all the time, let’s look at sports for instance, in a game of snooker you would not get by if you could only pot well.   To be good at snooker you would need good potting skills (Obviously) as well as safety pl ..read more

Is Wing Chun Hard or Soft?
Wing Chun Online Blog
by Sifu Colin Ward

Hard or Soft?   I once had an interesting question put to me:   “How can a person make his punch strong? Because for smooth hands or a hand that has not punched anyone before, surely it will not be able to fight against the strong opponent. In wing chun is it necessary that a person should have strong bones for strong punches?”   Well, first I would say that impact conditioning can be done simply by using a wall bag but as for strong bones etc. this would only be needed should we wish to share some of the impact. By switching energy off immediately afte ..read more
