I'm new to the forum, and a newbie to running hummer feeders in -13 Centigrade (11 Fahrenheit) weather. But that's what we have here in Vancouver BC . . . I set up a warmer (first time for me) under the feeder -- just a 15 watt light bulb in a plastic flowerpot, attached by wires to the feeder. All was good during daylight, when one hummer seemed to be roosting on the perch. I unplugged it at 10 PM, brought it into the kitchen overnight -- . . . and saw that the hummer was still sitting... Bees in hummingbird feeder

So my hummer-feeder has been "found" by bees. Rather odd in that the yellow thing they're clustering on is sold as a "bee guard". I like having bees around (I'm a vegetable gardener), but it would be nice to discourage them from sitting there. How do I do that ..read more

Hi all, I have been researching sugar all day and I came across this article by Joybilee Farm, which posits that the anti-orgianic-sugar sentiment is based on a myth. It says that both organic white sugar and organic raw sugar are in fact good to use as they contain little iron and contain no pesticide residue. Was curious what others consensus was on this article? Would you use organic white sugar or organic raw sugar? Thank you, Steve ..read more

Can anyone help please? We live in Basse Normandy, France, about 60 miles north of Mont St Michel. Last night at 8.30 my husband was in the garden and saw a hovering animal taking nectar from one of our climing plants (honeysuckle) at about gutter level (15 - 18 ft I guess). This animal I would estimate to have a body of approx 2 inches and a proboscis of approximately the same size. It was beating its wings in a blur to hover while it fed. The wing span would be a little more than the... Read more ..read more

Hey yall- I have a hummingbird on my porch for the 2nd year (year 1 the babies did not live and she abandoned) and the nest has at least one chick this year! I can see the nest right outside of my window so I got to know her patterns. While she was away, and the chicks were not present yet, I set up a wyze cam so I can watch her and track progress whenever I want. The last new nights I have noticed that she is not sleeping in her nest. It seems like she is constantly annoyed by getting... Read more ..read more
