Winter Fly Fishing Report Park City/Salt Lake City fly fishing report Winter edition. Both the Middle Provo River and the Lower Provo River are some of the best in the United States. Being tailwaters they stay cold, consistent and clean most of the year. Perfect for trout and the insect life that inhabit our rivers.  Consistent hatches throughout the Winter make for happy trout and great fly fishing. Utah is known for its Winter sports and that includes fly fishing. People are usually shocked to hear that bugs still hatch during the Winter months, In fact some of the best dry fly fish ..read more

Utah's Green Drake Utah’s Green Drake hatch is one of the most sought after and anticipated hatches of the year. Big trout, eating big bugs in the heat of Summer is what fly fishing is all about. This mayfly is one of the biggest bugs to hatch throughout the year and brings those seldom seen big trout to the surface. Two of my biggest dry fly caught trout were during the Green Drake hatch. One was a 26 inch brown trout and the other was a 25 inch brown trout. It’s one of the best times of year to try and find a monster trout on Utah streams. The big mayfly starts hatching on some of our small ..read more

Provo River Blue Wings Provo River Fly Fishing Report for November 2019 on the Middle Provo River. November is starting off with some amazing dry fly fishing. The blue winged olives are going strong from about 12;30 to 3:30. The little mayflies are about a size 22-24. Going smaller (Size 24) will definitely increase your odds for success. Nymphing is pretty good especially during the hatch. Tiny BWO emerger patterns such as RS2’s and ju ju baetis have been working great. Trout have begun their pre spawn behaviour and will be in full spawn mode by Thanksgiving. The BWO’s will fade and n ..read more

Provo River Fishing Report Buffalo Midge Provo River Buffalo Midge The Buffalo Midges on the Middle Provo River are hatching. In the midge world they are the biggest we see on Utah rivers. They are about a size 18 and black in color. Look for them in the upper stretch at around 11- 11:30. Depending on the day it can go for a couple hours. Trout tend to key into the ones that are just hatching with the shuck still attached. Mother Shuckers in black, brown and grey work great. Look for them to continue until late March early April. Provo River Blue Winged Olive Blue Winged Olive On The Provo River Provo River Blue Winged Olives March is almost here and that means the Provo River Blue Winged Olive (BWO) mayflies will be making an appearance. It’s a welcomed sign from Mother Nature that Winter is almost over. The BWO’s are the first mayflies of the year to hatch and also the last. BWO’s are a greyish olive color with grey wings and two tails. They look like little grey sail boats floating on the river surface. You’ll start seeing them in good numbers mid March with peak hatches in early April. They will kind of hatch a ..read more

Fly Fishing The Middle Provo

Fly Fishing The Middle Provo Fly fishing on the Middle Provo river really is some of the best in the country. Yeah it gets a fair amount of pressure and can be crowded. Having one of the best trout streams in the nation within 20 minutes from Park City probably has a little something to do with that. Not to mention the millions of people on the other side of the hill. As a Utah native and long time fly fisherman the Provo has been my go to since the early nineties. It was definitely a different time back then. If you went to the Lower Provo and it was “crowded” you’d go to the Middle Provo an ..read more

Fall fly fishing on Utah’s Provo River is by far my favorite time of year. With the cooler temperatures Fall is definitely in the air and the leaves are beginning to change to crimson, gold and orange. The weather has been incredible and the rivers are down to their Fall flows. PMD’s are making a strong showing in the afternoon with a few big caddisflies starting to appear. The Fall caddisflies should really get going within the next week. Nymphing has been great and should just get better as the Blue Winged Olives begin hatching in the next couple weeks and fishing will be on fire through Oc ..read more
