So, you just got a new Accessport. You found the perfect spot to mount it and are ready to start monitoring engine parameters. Now the question is what 6 gauges do you choose and what does this information tell you. These are great questions and are very common with many of our customers after their dyno tune. This post will detail some of the best gauges to monitor on your Accessport along with typical numbers you will see. We will also go over what gauges dont offer to much value for day to day monitoring. With this new found knowledge your Accessport will no longer be an “Anxietyport”. Yo ..read more

A Lean Mean Machine: The Dangers of Using Aftermarket MAFs
JM Automotive Blog
by Devin Waitt

Beyond OEM: How Aftermarket MAFs Can Impact Fueling and Performance I recently had the opportunity to do some back-to-back testing with mass airflow (MAF) sensors. The car in question was a 2012 WRX that I had previously tuned. The customer had replaced the MAF with an aftermarket Delphi and wanted us to see if everything was functioning as it should. I put the car on the dyno and did some pulls. Immediately, I could see that the air-fuel ratio (AFR) was much leaner than when I originally tuned it. I put a new OEM MAF in, and fueling was back where it was originally. The tune was not chang ..read more

Debunking Running E85 During the Winter
JM Automotive Blog
by Devin Waitt

I commonly see posts on Facebook asking about the pros and cons of being tuned on E85. On almost every one of those posts in the comments, there will be people saying you can’t run E85 in the winter because the car won’t start or you can’t or you shouldn’t run E85 year round because it’s hard on the injectors or fuel system. That information is definitely old and outdated. Fuel injectors and the OEM fuel system today are designed to run with some ethanol; At least here in Minnesota, almost every fuel at the pump contains at least 10% ethanol. Almost all of the aftermarket fuel injectors y ..read more

Subaru TGV/Air Pump Replacement vs Standalone ECU
JM Automotive Blog
by Devin Waitt

Disclaimer We, at JM, always suggest sticking with the stock ECU over a standalone EMS unless your car is a 100% dedicated race car and you need the additional features that the Cobb Accessport cannot support. Between the possibility of future emissions testing, drivability differences, vehicle resale value, and being more user friendly. Basically if you have any emissions related deletes we suggest spending the time, money, and energy on reinstalling those parts. Why the Stock ECU is better than a aftermarket ECU for street driven vehicles The resale value of a car with an aftermarket ECU an ..read more

What is Boost Creep and how can we prevent it?
JM Automotive Blog

Boost creep. You have heard the term, but do you really know what it means and why it can be a dangerous thing to happen to your car? Below I will explain what boost creep is, what causes boost creep, and how to remedy it. Boost creep can’t be tuned out, so how do you fix it? Boost creep is when boost hits wastegate pressure, but then slowly rises or “creeps” as engine RPM increases. On an STI, the stock wastegate actuator has a spring pressure of ~8psi. That means when running wastegate pressure you should hit ~8psi and hold around 8psi until redline. When boost creep happens, boost hits was ..read more

There’s a solution for Flex Fuel and using the Cobb Accessport
JM Automotive Blog

We have found a solution for flex fuel tuning your Subaru that works with the green speed update. Delicious Tuning re-released their V1 flex fuel kits. They had these kits before Cobb came out with the current kits you are used to. We have been tuning with these kits on the 2002-2005 WRX and EVO X with Accessports for many years.  We have found tuning flex fuel this way works very well. No check engine lights, and you get to use your Accessport These kits function the same as the Cobb kits by sending an ethanol signal to the ECU. We can use that signal to adjust boost, ignition timing ..read more

Subaru Tuning Update with Cobb Green Speed and Emissions We just wanted to let everyone know that with the new Cobb Green speed update we are still tuning cars and making some great power in the process. We will be making several posts focusing on different aspects of the update and how you can still modify your car and make power while doing so. This post is going to focus on check engine lights and what they mean with the Cobb Green Speed Update. Now that we can no longer disable check engine lights with your Accessport tune, you might be wondering how to move forward if you want to keep ..read more

2022 WRX Dyno Results Will Surprise You
JM Automotive Blog

How much power does a stock 2022 WRX make? The results are in! We got a chance to throw the brand new 2022 WRX on our Dyno and it laid down some great numbers in stock form. Making 219.4 HP and 218.8 TQ with just 12.8psi makes the new 2.4 setup pretty impressive. For comparison a stock 2020 STI makes 215 HP and 218 TQ. We have seen shops in the past use this engine in stock form and make over 500HP so the sky is the limit on power potential. It will also be interesting to see what we can do with the power from 6000-7000 as it currently peaking power around 5800rpms. We are excited to see th ..read more

7-11-2022 update: A new style of flex fuel is available from Delicious Tuning that works with Cobb’s Green Speed updates. More info can be found in our blog post here. Flex Fuel Update We have had a lot of inquiries over the last 24hrs about Cobb’s recent update. ***On May 2, 2022, our tuning program gets automatically updated by Cobb. After that anyone that has been previously flex fuel tuned or had any codes disabled when tuned, we will not be able to update your tune. Knock Knock – What is Engine Knock and How to Monitor it
JM Automotive Blog
by Devin Waitt
10M ago
I think every time I scroll through Facebook, I see posts asking “is this level of knock, ok?” or “my car just picked up -2.8deg knock, what do I do now?”. Queue the part out memes. While knock can be harmful to an engine, most knock detected by your Accessport is likely false knock. Knock, also called detonation, is when a small pocket of the air/fuel mix ignites outside of the flame front that was ignited by the spark plug. The shockwave created by this abnormal ignition creates rapid spikes of pressure in the cylinder and can cause damage if left untreated. The knock sensor is simply a mic ..read more
