I’m reading Haven by Emma Donoghue. It’s for my local book club. I have to say I’m not drawn to it, the blurb doesn’t excite me. Basically it’s ‘three monks go to an island’ (sounds like an Enid Blyton mystery!) to set up a new place of worship in the 7thC. It’s story of survival. I don’t think it’s my cup of tea but am giving it a go. It’s got some great reviews so I’m probably one of a minority. I’m also reading via Pigeonhole Estella’s Revenge by Barbara Havelocke, a gothic style story about Estella from Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Hopefully I will enjoy this one as it definitely ..read more

Flowers are bursting everywhere! And good books too. Share your reads this month. Finishing:The Real Queen Charlotte by Catherine Curzon (NF) Biography of Queen Charlotte. It was published to coincide with the Queen Charlotte spinoff from Bridgerton series TV adaptation. I've also read the author's earlier book The Daughters of George III: Sisters and Princesses about George III and Charlotte's daughters. Here are my April reads: A Bitter Remedy by Alis Hawkins This is the first book in the Oxford Mysteries set during the Victorian era. An undergraduate is found dead in his own bed and upon being examined, there are some unusual discoveries. Basil Rice, a Jesus college fellow, and ‘Non’ Vaughan, a Welsh female student newly permitted to attend lectures, team up to investigate. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s beautifully written and well researched. I loved the setting, it was very visual. I particularly loved the addition of a tandem tricycle - it made me smile every time it was mentioned ..read more

Yes just seen this on Facebook, apparently he was working on a new book as well. I'm looking forward to the TV version, I don't have Disney as a rule but subscribed for a few months last year to watch The Mandalorian, and then cancelled it, but I'll re-subscribe for Shardlake, it's only 4 episodes. So you could take out a brief sub for Disney, and then cancel it. I did the same with Apple, for The Essex Serpent. Statistics: Posted by Madeleine — Mon Apr 29, 2024 2:10 pm ..read more

Sadly, C J Sansom, author of the Shardlake books, died over the weekend. I was only watching something last night about the forthcoming Shardlake TV series and being disappointed it’s not being shown on a channel I have. It’s going to be shown on Disney channel which is a subscription I don’t pay for. . Statistics: Posted by Vanessa — Mon Apr 29, 2024 12:21 pm ..read more

I’m reading The Cloisters by Katy Hays, gothic fiction set in New York about a would-be curatorial associate who is assigned instead to the Cloisters as a research assistant, looking into the powers of divination and she comes across a mysterious, believed-to-be lost pack of 15thC tarot cards and it all leads to a murder. I've got this one too! I was a bit disappointed with The Cloisters. I’ll be interested to know what you think of it, Madeleine. Statistics: Posted by Vanessa — Fri Apr 26, 2024 9:13 am ..read more

I’m now reading The Household by Stacey Halls, set in the Victorian era about a house for fallen women. It was inspired by a project set up by Charles Dickens. It’s a library book. I’m also reading via Pigeonhole The Two Deaths of Ruth Lyle by Nick Louth, a psychological thriller about the murder of the same person seemingly but set 50 years apart.
