NACFE: small depots are ready to scale electrification

When it comes to fleet electrification, The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) said the process for many ends up being like a high school dance–trucking companies sitting on one side, utilities across the room, and no one’s talking to each other. There’s a need to change that, and data from the newest report from NACFE and RMI analyzed performance data from 22 production-level battery electric vehicles (BEVs), to show that companies may not need as much power as they anticipate. The vehicles represented include Class 2 (vans, step vans) through Class 8 (regional-, long-haul ..read more

Headlines touting the latest lower emissions, hyper-efficient and even zero-emissions truck equipment have dominated headlines for the past four years. (Trust me, we’re well aware of it.) Now, the decarbonization question is shifting its focus. Instead of turning to OEMs and suppliers and saying: Electric trucks–when? Hydrogen fuel cell–when? Natural gas–when? OEMs and suppliers have largely delivered. Battery electric zero emissions trucks are widely available. While they’re suitable for a chunk of applications and fleet duty cycles, they can fall short on range for the majority of fleets. Th ..read more

Used Class 8 retail truck sales dropped by 1.5% to $58,400 in May, according to the latest numbers from ACT Research. ACT said y/y, used retail prices were 15% lower. ACT Research Vice President Steve Tam suggests that the softer price outlook is due to a weaker than expected freight market. He expects that prices will stay stable through most of 2024 and transition to year-over-year growth in Q4. “Same dealer Class 8 retail truck sales slowed for a third consecutive month in May,” Tam said. “The 3.9% decline matched the seasonal drop indicated by history. May is typically about five percentag ..read more

Taking center stage inside the Kenworth booth at this year’s ACT Expo was one of the most unique trucks at the show, but there was more than meets the eye to the Kenworth SuperTruck 2. Its sleek shape that reduces air resistance to improve aerodynamics 48% over a typical Kenworth T680 only hinted at the powertrain technology within. It features an MX-11 engine, modestly enhanced and integrated into a mild hybrid system operating at 48 volts. This system captures braking energy to charge batteries, which then power various vehicle components like cooling fans and electronic power steering. This ..read more
