The apostle Paul seems to holding forth for us a simple formula that the more you give the more you will receive from the Lord. Is this what Paul is saying? Is this what He is teaching? Is Paul defining wealth in a different terms than we understand or read into the text? Or is Paul not so concerned about the quantity of the gift? Paul and the Corinthian church have had their struggles. Paul writes 2 Corinthians to help the church see the nature of suffering, valuing things in light of Christ, and seeing the centrality of the apostolic gospel. Now, Paul speaks of the joy of the Lord, and in particular the joy of seeing the Corinthians repent in a godly sorrow. What is this godly sorrow? Why is it joyful that they repent in such a godly sorrow? Why can’t they just be sorry or have sorrow? Please stay tuned to our sermon titled, "The Joy of the Lord." Many times when we make the case that the church is the new Israel we might think of Ephesians 2-3 where Paul speaks of the mystery of the gentiles coming into the house of God, and the house of God being one house. However, in a sense we can see the Apostle Paul’s ministry as a continuation of Isaiah’s ministry. Isaiah predicted the new creation that is to come, but it never came in Isaiah’s lifetime. How does Paul pick up this theme of a new creation and use it to exhort the church? How is this encouraging for us this day as we live before the Lord? Meaningless, meaningless, all is meaningless under the sun. If we walked around saying this all the time we probably would not be asked to be people’s dinner guest’s very often. Yet, these words are a paraphrase of the opening of the book of Ecclesiastes. In what sense is it true that everything is meaningless? How do we know that the writer of Ecclesiastes is not just some pessimist who had a series of bad days? How does the apostle Paul encourage us to see that while we suffer in this life we truly can take joy in this suffering? Please keep listening to our sermon titled, "A Treasure in Jar ..read more

The apostle Paul knows that we do not ask Jesus into our heart. In fact, the door to Paul’s heart was kicked open, Paul was bought to his knees, and Paul was claimed as a prisoner of God’s holy war by the risen Christ. How does this seem to influence Paul’s thought? How does this impact his orientation as a minister of the New Covenant? How does this impact our thinking and orientation through this age? How is this encouraging to know that the Lord renovates us by His power? Please stay tuned as we listen to this sermon titled, "The Blessing of Life." In our day and age if one is perceived as flip flopping on various issues their leadership credibility is called into question. We wonder if the person is fit for public office. The Apostle Paul is accused of something similar. It seems that there are some in Corinth who doubt the credibility of the apostle because he did not return to them as he promised to do. Is the apostle Paul a flip flopper? Is he a man who lacks credibility and orients himself in light of the current political situation? Please stay tuned to our sermon titled, "A Different Plan, but One Intention." The post A Different ..read more
