Hi everyone. I have a bit of a different post today. For those that clicked on this hoping for a new article with some card analysis, or maybe even another card preview, I apologize but this is not it. TLDR: I am officially retiring the blog. I’ll use the post to go into more detail for those that want it. For everyone else, goodbye and thanks for everything, truly. There hasn’t been a post in more than a year, but I wanted to officially communicate the website’s retirement, both for my own peace of mind but also to update anyone that might have been expecting more posts. I want to thank those ..read more

Hey everyone! Welcome to the last Obscure Studies preview of the Scarlet Keys spoiler season. Thanks again to Fantasy Flight Games for the opportunity to showcase these cards. We have another Rogue card today. Everyone, meet Embezzled Treasure. Theme Like Hidden Pocket, the theme of this card is very evident and it fits in rogue pretty well. After all, smuggling out a treasure chest from the Miskatonic Museum seems like something Kymani Jones would very well do. It’s also Illicit, which fits the big theme of the green cards of this expansion. Despite fitting well in the Rogue flavor pool, thi ..read more

Hey everyone, if you’re seeing this, that means the community has deciphered my puzzle and managed to figure out the text of my preview card. Maybe they’ve even managed to decipher its title! In case you haven’t, I want to introduce everyone officially to my second Scarlet Keys preview: Hidden Pocket. Theme The flavor of this card is immediate. The name and art give away exactly what this is and the second line of the card fits perfectly within that theme. After all, what has pockets? Clothing… and maybe some types of armor, I guess. In any case, the thematic package here is pretty complete ..read more

Hi everyone, it’s that time of year again, which means another very special article here on Obscure Studies. Today, I have an official preview card for The Scarlet Keys player expansion. Thanks to Fantasy Flight Games for the opportunity to show this card. I think it’s got a lot to talk about and in true Obscure Studies fashion, I will be doing so in this post. Without further ado, meet Salvage. Theme This might already be obvious for anyone who has read the card and played a decent amount of Survivor decks, but this card fits perfectly into the Scavenger archetype of that class. Thematically ..read more

Hi and welcome to another installment of Mechanical Meanings! In this series, I take a look at different mechanics in Arkham Horror: The Card Game. In today’s article, I’ll be taking a look at a mechanic from early in the game’s existence. It’s been slowly augmented along the game’s lifespan, but got a big boost with a few fairly recent products. Despite that, it’s still overcoming a negative reputation. This article will be all about Exile. Where it came from To start, a short explanation on the Exile mechanic, for those who might be unfamiliar. You can read the Rules Reference entry here, bu ..read more

Hi and welcome to the third article of Breaking Down the Game. This series takes a step back and analyzes more meta aspects of Arkham Horror: The Card Game, taking into consideration other board and card games. Today, I’m stepping even further into game elements that make Arkham Horror special since it’s one of the few of its type to feature such a mechanic. Today’s article will be focusing on the experience system. Similarly to the chaos bag, which we covered in the last article, you’ll probably be very familiar with purchasing new cards with experience. There’s plenty of ways this mechanic i ..read more

Deckbuilding Options part 7: Progression
Obscure Studies

Hi and welcome to another, maybe surprising, article in the deck building option series. It’s been a while since this series has been updated, but since then, we’ve gotten a huge update to the investigator pool with the release of the Edge of the Earth investigator expansion. Not only did this release bring along a new model, it also brought along a new cycle of deck building options that you might already be familiar with. It also hopefully has replaced the word cycle for upcoming campaigns with the word expansion. That will probably make some of my articles less confusing. Today we’re going ..read more

Hi there and welcome to another installment of Mechanical Meanings! In this series, I take a look at different mechanics in Arkham Horror: The Card Game. In today’s article, I’ll be taking a look at one of my favorite mechanics in the game. The initial idea behind it is simple, but I think there’s plenty to talk about today as I take a look at Myriad. Why two? Before we take a look at the Myriad mechanic and cards proper, it’s important to contextualize their design. If you’ve built a deck in Arkham Horror, you know that the limit for individual cards is two per deck with the maximum deck size ..read more
