Ooh, She Fancy! (Surviving First Class Flight Attendant Training)
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

Say hello to the newest purser, coming to a first-class flight near you! (My company would disown me if they saw me using these non-branded terms to describe my position, but I like to keep myself a bit anonymous here, and using general airline vernacular helps.) I told y’all a few weeks ago that I would be attending seven days of first-class training. (‘Five days learning how to use an airplane oven and two learning to tell my coworkers, nicely, to do their jobs,’ is I think how I worded it.) Well, that training has come and gone. When I wrote about it two weeks ago, intending to publish ..read more

A Wheel In The Sky Blog

If there is one thing my avoidantly-attached, air-sign ass needs, it is CHANGE. And I’ve got just what the doctor ordered. Yours truly is slated to be the next California Girl, and she couldn’t be more pleased. But that’s not the only big change in my life. I’m using this week’s post as a life update. If you’re not into it, no hard feelings. Pop back in two weeks to find more flight attendant, travel, and personal content. (Or stick around and check out the archives now!) So, here’s what’s going on with me. 1. Moving to San Diego   First and foremost, I’m moving to San Diego. I hav ..read more

A Wheel In The Sky Blog
by Toni

Welcome back, everybody! This week I’m coming in hot with some more need-to-know flight attendant info. Namely, the things you should never ask a flight attendant. There are questions that every flight attendant hates answering. We may answer with a smile, but on the inside we are dying a little every time one of these six questions is asked. I’m here to help YOU interact better with flight attendants and to save US the pain of regurgitating the same tired answers to the same tired questions. Win-Win! I recently ended my long streak of solitude and have entered the wild world of dating, ag ..read more

The Anatomy of An Airplane Bathroom (And How To Use It)
A Wheel In The Sky Blog
by Toni

It’s a mystery! An enigma! The most confusing contraption the world has ever seen!   It’s the airplane bathroom. As a flight attendant, sometimes it feels like I spend half my workday explaining to people how to open the lavatory door and the other half flushing the toilet after they’ve left. Y’all stick trash in every crack and crevice you can find, have no idea how to turn the sink on, and don’t even get me started with walking in barefoot. This madness must end. Today we’re going to tackle all the intricacies of the airplane lavatory. I’m going over each component, what it looks li ..read more

Why I Decided To Freeze My Eggs At 37
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

Ice, ice, baby! The title is a bit of a misnomer. For one thing, though the decision was made months ago, the actual retrieval and freezing of said eggs happened just last week, a few days after my 38th birthday. And beyond “Why I decided to freeze my eggs,” I’m also going to be outlining the egg-freezing process, expectations vs. results, and the frustrations of navigating the American healthcare system. Weeee! If you’ve ever thought about freezing your eggs, or wondered about the process, then buckle up, I’ve got all the info. Disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor or healthcare professional. T ..read more

10 Years of Flight Attendant Life: Reflecting On A Decade In The Air
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

“I’ll try it for a year,” I said. “Until I figure out what’s next.” That resolution was uttered for the first time in 2013, moments after accepting my flight attendant job offer and months before training would start. I was on a cross-country road trip headed for Portland, Oregon, where I’d decided to up and move because I needed “A change.” Change was coming. Monday, January 22, was my ten-year anniversary of working as a flight attendant. I have been slinging drinks, hopping flights, bearing delays, boarding for free, and dragging bags through airports for an entire DECADE. All with the ..read more

“I’ll try it for a year,” I said. “Until I figure out what’s next.” This is what I told myself when I accepted my flight attendant job offer. How It Feels To Be A Flight Attendant Amid Aviation Disasters
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

Hey friends. This is not the topic I’d hoped would kick off my 2024 blogging, but alas, here we are. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you no doubt have seen the news of some major aviation disasters and mishaps in recent weeks. First, there was the collision of a Japan Air flight, resulting in the plane bursting into flames and a full evacuation. And next was a piece of a Boeing 737 Max blown off the aircraft WHILE IN THE AIR, resulting in a giant hole and a rapid decompression. Boeing is in hot water, the crew of the Japan Airlines flight have been hailed as heroes, and all this ha ..read more

My Travel Year In Review: 2023
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

2023, Kindly see yourself out. Y’all, I’m going to be really honest, 2023 was a hard year for me. If it was hard for you, consider yourself seen. Things didn’t go quite as I expected. Projects I thought would be lucrative were less so, due to wild acceleration of cost. I’ve made little progress on the writing project I thought I’d be finished with in 2022. I’m singler, and childless, and older than ever. I’m losing someone dear to me and it’s devastating, and frankly unfair. I can’t look around and prove to myself that I’ve done everything right. Overall, things look pretty messy. It feels ..read more

The 10 Best Books of 2023 (According to Me)
A Wheel In The Sky Blog

Winter is very much here in New England, and you know what that means…   No, not skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or any other frigid activities. IT’S COZY SEASON! For me, the winter is best spent inside a warm room, preferably with a hot beverage and a big window, looking out at the falling snow. And a good book is the cherry on top that makes this picture of perfection complete. Something about the closing of a year makes me want to reflect, to make lists. What worked, what didn’t, where I went, what I did, what I liked and didn’t. And today we’re reflecting on books.   I men ..read more
