For September dove and early Goose and in the winter in the cattails wouldn't choosing a yellow lab pup for our first retriever be the best bet ? I know it's what's in the pup not what s on the outside but wouldn't that black coat be rough on them in early season ..read more

My Yellow lab has been away for training for 3 months now with a reputable trainer on the East Coast. Has done really well with force fetch and on land with dummies, dead birds, and live birds. He immediately showed issues with water when being introduced but eventually would ease in and retrieve bumpers/dead birds but without any enthusiasm. He is being washed out of training due to his disdain for water and not completing retrieves on live mallards. He has major drive on land and always... 12 Month Yellow Lab Hates Water ..read more

I am starting to look for a new pup after 2yrs of not having one. My wife does not want a large dog in the house again after our 90lb lab which according to his parents should have been around 65lbs. I live in ND and primarily hunt waterfowl with some upland. Up until the last few years the majority of my bird hunting was out of blinds in fields. Lately my group has been doing some duck decoying over water and have been having more success there than fields. I am looking at the Boykin... Starting to look ..read more

We are experiencing something new in our household of hunting dogs. My chocolate came home from hunting today and his left rear foot was swollen and he refuses to walk on it. It is red and sore to the touch but no obvious trauma or wound and he worked hard all day with no problem ever shown in the field. I took him to the vet after getting home and they said they are aware of marsh foot with waterfowl hunting dogs and gave me some antibiotic pills and pills for swelling and pain. Has... I just purchased my first puppy and am intending to train him as a duck dog. I would really like to train him myself but my only concern is I travel for work occasionally leaving Monday returning on a Friday. Generally never back to back weeks. My wife has committed to helping where and as much as she can when I am gone. We have access to nearby fields and ponds. Also, when not traveling I work from home with reasonable flexibility. I’m confident I can work him minimum twice a day. For... Duck Dog Training ..read more
