During week 4, we learned a lot about writing procedures and manuals. We had an assignment to create a procedure document for Humans v. Zombies at RIT, which I found very challenging due to my lack of knowledge of the game. I learned a lot about keeping not just the primary audience in mind, but also secondary and tertiary audiences.  The importance of manuals was also emphasized this week, as we watched an episode of Owner’s Manual and saw how much having a manual or some sort of information could make all the difference in succeeding in a task or not. It was interesting to see this alon ..read more

Blog 2 as a photographer, the future i foresee for myself involves most likely a field in photojournalism or in fashion photography for things like magazines or billboards. in careers like these, data management is of the upmost importance. Throughout this course, there has been so much information provided that I have been able to successfully apply to my writing to improve it and connect with my audience through it. One thing that has stuck with me intensely through this course has been the concept of visualization within your writing. Many ideas for making sure that your writing is appealing to your viewers fall within the category of visual appeal and organization. One assignment we did in this course was to create an infographic on a topic of our choosing. One of the most important aspects of this assignment was to organize ..read more

Taking the course in Technical Writing has been a beneficital experience for me, shifting my focus from solely the content of a document to also considering its visual design. Previously my main concern was ensuring that the content contained all necessary information for the audience. However even if a document is packed with a necessary information, that does not mean the audience will read it. This encouraged me to put more importance in the visual design when communicating. I learned strategies to improve document readability, such as using lists or bullets to break up information, changin ..read more

Of all the topics that were covered in class, the topic that was the most impactful for me and changes the way I approach my work is the levels of edit. This topic is helpful in that it is the one that I can relate to the best with what I currently do. Although I would have like to use these topics sooner, it helps me reflect back on my earlier works. For instance, learning about four levels of editing has made me realize that I could have edited my work better as I usually do the first level of editing which is revising. During my experiences as a student I have written multiple lab reports i ..read more

As a Computer Science major with a minor in Astronomy, my academic focus has mainly centered around coding, with occasional involvement in astronomy research. Writing wasn’t a significant part of my academic routine until I took this course. Upon completing it, I’ve noticed improvements not only in my technical writing skills but also in my coding and research abilities. One crucial lesson I’ve learned is the importance of effectively structuring and organizing research. Previously, I tended to dive into research without a clear plan, resulting in prolonged and ineffective work. Now, I’ve beco ..read more

For almost three years now, I’ve been working as a systems engineer, writing and editing technical documents. Although, I’ve always had relatively strong communication skills, it occurs to me that I’ve never actually taken a technical communications course. So, when I decided to return to grad school and had an opening in the spring semester, I opted to finally enroll in Technical Communications at RIT. I think the most influential aspect of this course has been centered around understanding my intended audience. To be sure, I’ve certainly understood how to target a particular age group, or a ..read more

There are a few chapters and strategies that I learned in this course that I will go on to incorporate in future professional writing. Genre, Format and Conventions: Before this course, I had heard the term ‘memo’ and ‘proposal’ in passing but I didn’t understand the conventions of that format. Since I come from a background of academic writing, I understand how to write in accordance with a specific format or an outline of standards. Although, I was not introduced to that particular set of standards. Visual Feel and Graphic Design In Academia, quote-filled paragraphs can sometimes span entire ..read more
