I did not perform live gigs in over 2 years now because of the pandemic. Now is the time to go back behind the decks. Not just behind the decks but in front of the people. In a week I will play at Weserkrug which is a nice intimate place in Berlin. Perfect opportunity to get back on track after a massive break. So, what can go wrong? What are the main ingredients of the comeback gig?
1. DJ Equipment.
My DJ setup did not change. I still use Pioneer CDJ setup which I really enjoy. So, no surprises there.
2. The Music.
Is there anything new here? Yes, there is. Is only new music-good music ..read more

I guess its the age, or my love for food… but I started to enjoy my time after the party ends. No, it is not the after party, it’s the kebab we have after the party. Kebab stories are stories that happen while the sauce is dripping down your face.
Opposite to many beliefs DJs do not always continue with cocaine after parties after they finish the gig. Nothing against some of my colleagues but I really appreciate a good kebab after the show.
It somehow gives a healthy dosage of reality to the weekend as we talk about the real things and challenges we face. Some of the topics and comments while ..read more

The worldwide lockdown has taken everything by storm, no doubts about that. The Berlin DJ industry is one of the many businesses, affected by this pandemic.
Dance clubs are under a lockdown or hard restrictions, and electronic music is breathing the last of its remains.
With the music industry at a stop, most of the DJs are looking for new ways to learn and interact. Many of them have lost heart and shifted careers to support their finances. Others, however, take the support of online endeavors to keep going.
The Covid-19 has indeed hit the dance culture swift and hard. But despite its d ..read more

Concerning all those DJs in lockdown, streaming from home, the title of this post could easily be “DJs in pajamas”. We are still in some form of partial lockdown, meaning clubs and bars are not open. At least not for the DJ events and it will stay that way for a month or two. Maybe even more.
What can a DJ in lockdown do in this type of situation?
Depending on the type of DJ, but if you are a producer as well, there is a nice opportunity here to make some music. Usually, it’s never enough time for making music so there you go. Feel free to focus on the new releases.
However, music sales decrea ..read more

The Corona circus is fading away slowly, very slowly. I’ve seen some articles about the social distancing party that took place in Germany. The one covered in Resident Advisor was in Münster at the Coconut Beach.
Let’s dive into it…
Firstly, nice to see parties are happening again. Regardless of the concept or restrictions.
On the published video we can see markings on the ground that are used to place people equally on the floor. So, distancing can be respected. Coconut Beach is a venue for 2000 people. The promoter of the event released 100 tickets at the price of 70 EUR.

Just recently I came across a new video-presentation-teaser about digital technology in DJing: “How Tech is Changing DJing”.
There have been numerous articles and videos about the subject in the span of the last two decades and it’s just getting ever crazier as time goes…
How Tech is Changing DJing? Well, we can ask Sven Väth or Derick May: is DJ-ing different for them nowadays than it was in the past? They both still play with vinyl. Jeff Mills is not far away from that either, incorporating also CDJ’s but still beat-matching while spinning during his sets.
Is beat-matching one o ..read more

In today’s world preparing your DJ set may seem like an easy thing to do, considering the technology and accessibility of the music you need. But is this actually the case?
Why do some people embrace the easy way of getting things done, rather than do things properly? Sure, you can get a bunch of banging tracks to smash the floor and go home a hero. However, isn’t your role as a DJ to also educate people and bring original sounds to the dance floor?
As someone who is active in the music industry for over 20 years (go here to download sets and tracks for free), I have witnessed various artists ..read more
