The Four Foundations of Mindfulness

There are infinite reasons to attend a yoga and meditation retreat. But three in particular have been on my mind as we get closer to an April 2023 return to Baja Sur. The top 3 reasons to retreat? Travel, practice and community. Keep reading to learn why.
1. Travel Is a Good Teacher
This past year, I spent just 66 days in the United States. And while there, I put over 12,000 miles on my car. All of this to say, I’ve been continuously traveling. The idea of being somewhere new and unfamiliar is, well, familiar. That said, traveling has yet to cease providing me with profound insight into my rel ..read more

1 in 3 adults fails to get sufficient sleep for optimal health. Either we lie awake at night sleepless, or awaken throughout the sleep cycle, never falling into the deep restorative state we need for optimal health.
If you’re dealing with chronic or occasional sleeplessness, you may have heard of sleep hygiene. These practices are typically focused on the hours before bedtime. Such as the suggestion to stay away from screens, food and wine in the 2 hours before you hit the sack.
But sleeplessness is part of a cycle with no beginning. Thus, we could insert a solution at any point along this con ..read more

Those familiar with Southern Baja will know the mission town of San Javier is small. Very small. Most visitors spend one hour here. Enough time for a selfie in from of the mission, a cold jicama juice from across the street, and a short walk along the cobblestoned Main Street. We spent three days and would have gladly stayed longer. There’s plenty to do in San Javier.
From Scorpion Bay to San Javier
From San Juanico there are two primary routes to San Javier. You can travel on pavement to Loreto, then head west into the hills of San Javier. Or, head south on pavement until just north of Ciudad ..read more

When there’s no surf in San Juanico there’s still plenty of fun to be had nearby. In the second of our ‘Day Trippin’ posts, we take a little tour to camp in Bahia Concepcion. If you have 4-wheel drive, high clearance and a taste for adventure, this beautiful destination is approximately 4 hours from San Juanico. Because it’s a bit of a drive, you’ll want to spend at least one night. But also, because camping in Bahia Concepcion is paradise.
Traveling Dirt
We departed Scorpion Bay at 8:30am with plans to take the dirt road that runs from San Isidro to Mulege. This is the official Mexican ..read more

A personal, at-home yoga and/or meditation retreat is easy, affordable, and benefits both mind and body. All you need is 24-hours or more to yourself, and a home retreat plan. Learn more about the benefits of a home retreat and why you should schedule one ASAP.
The Benefit of Solitary Retreat
A well-balanced spiritual practice combines study under the guidance of a teacher with self-study and time spent in contemplation and review. One should also seek balance between group study and time spent in relationship with alone time spent in solitude.
A formal retreat is an opportunity to develop a d ..read more

We recently moved to Mexico with two loaded cars and two dogs in the midst of a global pandemic. As conscientious (and cautious) travelers, we opted to tent camp along the route from Fort Worth, TX to San Juanico, BCS to avoid hotels and the risk of infecting ourselves or others. I’m not sure we’ll ever do it differently. Tent camping was a great experience. We found beautiful spots to stay every night, and along the way, built a wish-list for future trips. Here’s our daily road trip log. May it be of benefit to future travelers!
Day 1: Fort Worth to Monahans, Texas
We managed to leave Fort Wo ..read more

This piece was originally published July 2020 on the Bodhi Yoga Spain blog.
Today marks four months since I’ve been in self-quarantine, hiding away from the global pandemic that is Covid-19. It’s actually been a really nice time. I’m privileged with the opportunity to work from home, a cabin outside of the city where I can enjoy long dog walks twice daily and the birds at my backyard feeder. I benefit from home grocery delivery and a once weekly visit to an open air farmer’s market, where of course, I wear my mask.
With yoga studios closed, I no longer drive 60-90 minutes daily to teach. I’ve ..read more

We’re back from our maiden voyage, and after 5,000 miles we discovered RV life was both harder and far more wonderful than we imagined it would be. Isn’t that how most things go? Here’s what we learned and what we loved…
French Creek, Medicine Bow Wilderness, Wyoming (all photos by Sara-Mai Conway)RV Life Requires Money
As you may have learned from our last post, there’s nothing cheap about the RV life. We bought ours used to save money but quickly spent more than we bargained for to get our travel trailer boondocking ready. We spent a lot on our tow-vehicle too, all to avoid the huge expense ..read more
