Eric’s Excellent Alaskan Adventure: Kodiak and Katmai Encounter

Quick View The Beast - Gallery Image As a Canadian wildlife photographer, I’ve had plenty of experience with brown bears, in particular our famous inland Grizzly. I absolutely love them, and always will. But, for those of us with a bear obsession, there is an almost religious pilgrimage that beckons us — to the place of the fabled giants. The Kodiak Islands and the Katmai National Park on Alaska’s southeast coast are home to the biggest brown bears on earth. Enormous, powerful, and stunningly beautiful, they are the stuff of dreams. For other people, these kinds of dreams might be a little sc ..read more

In a million years, I would not have imagined I would be writing a “blog”. I may have even asked how to spell it when the idea was first suggested. When I realized it is a golden opportunity to share more of my Wildlifer adventures with you, or anyone who stumbles on the “blog”, I decided to jump in with both feet. So here goes. Dear Diary… Just kidding. Maybe we won’t get quite that personal for the first entry. Let’s dip our toes in this “blog” water first, shall we? The Wonderful Way It All Began Readers of a certain age (let’s call them “experienced”) will fondly remember Su ..read more

“Whiskers”, the most playful fox I’ve ever met! Some days are less productive than others in the “workday” of a wildlife photographer.  Each Fall season, I head to the Canadian Rockies to check out the Elk rut, Big Horn sheep, Grizzly bears, Black Bears and a host of animals all on the move to settle in for winter.  The weather can be cold and miserable, but I look forward to this trip every year, and wouldn’t miss it.  For these types of trips, I take my truck and camper, and tow a cargo trailer with my quad and gear.  I am always thankful for the fully winterized unit o ..read more

Hang on, folks! I’ll be with you in a second. Just getting out of bed. All my parts don’t wake up at the same time. You know how it is. Full disclosure: I am an Alaskan brown bear. I live on the southeast coast of Alaska, in the Katmai National Park, across the strait from the Kodiak Archipelago. If I seem overly sensitive about my identity, I would remind you it’s all your fault. It’s not like we started inventing names for ourselves. You people are obsessed with labels. And you’re arguing about them and changing them all the time. Speaking for all bears, if I may, we’re sick of the hubbub ..read more

The Wildlifer’s Secret to Taking Amazing Wildlife Photos (Hint: It Could Be Love)

You must have a great camera! A couple was taking in dozens of my favourite photographs at my show booth, when the gentleman asked, “Did you take all those photos? You must have a great camera!”    I thanked him for the compliment, but couldn’t resist adding, “That might be like complimenting your wife on the quality of the oven after she puts on an epic five-course meal.”  He considered this for a moment, and smiled. The lights slowly went on. Great Camera, Good Luck, or Hard Work? How much does the camera — or even dumb luck — contribute to capturing that epic, tack-sharp wil ..read more

Lazy Larry Welcomes You to the Wildlifer Journal

What do you people want from me? Being a bear is exhausting. Look. Honestly, I’d rather be napping. It’s my greatest natural skill, and I’ve spent my life perfecting it. You think writing is easy for a bear? Try typing with oven mitts on, and you might have some idea of the challenge. But a deal’s a deal, and when the Wildlifer calls in a favour (or coerces you with a salmon), you’ve got to hold up your end of the bargain. It’s the Code of the Wild. “Hey, Larry. You’re good with words — for a bear. Seriously, nobody knows wildlife like you do. People love you. I love you. Why don’t you write ..read more
