JMB Aircraft acquiring the Phoenix U-15?

I'm seeing this banner on https://phoenixairusa.com/ (yes, the left side is cut off in Chrome for me).   JMB has this post up which pretty much gives it away: https://news.jmbaircraft.com/2024/?️-1st-of-march-we-unveil-new-series-of-aircraft/ I wonder how this will affect distribution in the US. I know the manufacturer changed just a few years ago. Seems a bit strange to see another change so soon ..read more

"TaxiCam" - a nose camera for the Phoenix

I've temporarily mounted a small "bullet" camera under the Phoenix, just ahead of the landing gear. It displays the image on the Dynon SkyView monitor, using the Dynon video adapter. It's nice to see ahead of the plane while taxiing, and I think it will be a help for maneuvering into thermals, because I'll be able to see where the dust devil is below me. The image is shown 50%, with the other 50% being the engine page (shown), or the PFD or Map page; it can also be shown 100%, so it almost fills the screen ..read more

Dynon Skyview Battery Test

Hi All,   I have tried to get 43TC's Dynon to go into battery test for a couple of years now. What I learn from Jim was that I needed to fly for an hour and a half that then try.  No luck.  Finally, I ask our mechanic (Scott Zumwalt) to look into it.  He first tried to charge both batteries and then run the test.  No luck.  At that point he called Dynon.  Dynon told him that they had just discovered another reason why the unit would not go into test. Apparently the unit will not go into test if it thinks the plane is moving. The solution was to go into setup ..read more

Oil temperatures in the winter
Motor Gliders Forums » Phoenix S-LSA Motorglider

I found out yesterday when flying around 5000 ft with the OAT reading 23 F, that Ms. Dynon was not happy, as the oil temperature dropped below 120 (cowl flap closed) and the “engine speed” complaint was issued.  After powering back and descending to 2000 ft all was good again.  I was thus wondering if folks flying the Phoenix in cold climates are taping off part of the radiator, which is what I did with the Pipistrel Sinus I had.  Any suggestions ..read more

Morning Glory flights.

After years of trying and few interupted attempts - I finally got to fly the Morning Glory. Three times!! The Phoenix is perfect for this: great for cruising the 1,200nm trip up, then handled the Glory cloud beautifully.   The lcoal news weatherman gave a very good overview of what the Morning Glory is (with some of my video):  https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1020640395753694 I have started a youtube channel (www.youtube.com/@flightsofthephoenix) and just posted the video of our first wave day.  Subscribe to get the follow up videos of the next 2 wave flights. Phoenix Altitude Record?

The goal was an OLC speed flight, but the northwest wind was not productive for good wave formation, so the goal was scrapped.  Got a nice altitude flight however, making it to 28,200' MSL.  I know Russ Owens has been high in the wave in his Phoenix.  The north bound track was painfully slow, but the southbound direction produced over 170kt groundspeed. Motored back to Minden at low altitude to stay below the strong headwind.  Arrived home just at sunset.  Got slammed entering the Carson Valley, and the Dynon Lady yelled "G Load G Load G Load".  First time ever to ..read more

New Phoenix Owner

My Pipistrel Sinus had an electrical fire on the taxiway this year that destroyed all forward of the firewall.  I thus decided to buy a used Phoenix with the insurance money.  Talk about rising from the ashes….Wow, this is a far more fun plane to fly even if you have to work a bit harder to master the landings.  I like the 100 hp engine and the presence of two batteries to ensure engine restart when soaring with the Dynon on.  N645N was brought back from the DC area to the UP of Michigan with the help of David McConeghey and then I did some additional training with Jim Lee ..read more
