On a UK forum somebody has mentioned a newer book by Monty Alford [ which I googled and just ordered] which has an updated and improved version of the little snow melting candle stove. Does anybody have a copy of Wilderness Survival Guide and could care to comment? I'm part way though making another but using a little TomShoo titanium cup, and making a big cat food can candle to suit ..read more

So I've bit the dollar bullet and bought a small UL tiny woodstove. purchased S/H locally and I've just had a very frustrating 3 hours fitting the unused baffle to the used stove. Somewhere in the shed is a stove jack I bought for a very different project a few years ago but haven't used and a length of Titanium I bought several years ago and have used intermittently in tin can/stockpot stoves so I have two different flue heights to make use of. This will be for the Black Diamond Megalite I... Lite outdoors stove placement question ..read more

Hopefully I'm not breaking any forum rules, as I understand them. After a bit of research, I put in an order for a folding titanium hot tent stove. It has very good reviews (4.9 / 5) from users, it's supposedly made with 0.8 mm thick titanium (most cheap hot tent stoves are 0.6 mm, but I've seen more expensive ones up to 1 mm), and is of a decent size (depending on whether it's right for you depends on your tent size and temperatures you camp in). It's currently on sale until March 28th... Current Deal on a Folding 0.8mm Ti Hot Tent Stove ..read more

was going through my winter daypack the other day (which just happens to look very much like my elk hunting pack!) and it got me thinking, dangerous I know I've spent a few unplanned nights out (usually elk hunting) and they all had one thing in common- they sucked pretty bad I carry a AMK Thermolite bivy, a XL contractor bag (XL as in 3x7'), a "sportsman" blanket, short ccf pad, some cordage and a Silky pocketboy for shelter/sleeping. I've done the lean-to/long fire- lots of... re-thinking my winter daypack contents ..read more

Monty Alfords Yu-Can stove

A topical subject for me as I got caught by bad visibility last month and decided to detour to a small shelter hut with no stove. I was load hauling and strangely for me I had no little gas stove in my day pack. Plenty of fire-lighting gear but no fireplace or even wood as well above the tree line. This was the second "Incident" for the season and while not dangerous it was a thirsty night, as well as my pad I had my big goretex bivvy sack, an old climbers goretex leg cover and my DAS pants... Found Stuff and Junk. Gotta love that.

Found this pair of M1951 wool field pants cleaning out my parents home, this was something of a defect in my cold weather kit as I had long ago stupidly traded off a nice (then) inexpensive west german wool field pants for something or another, and never got around to buying more. Wool pants of course should be in everyone’s kit in there somewhere, these are stretchy with plenty of room to maneuver. I had to let the hem out to avoid the highwater, but they still fit excellent even though... Found Stuff and Junk. Gotta love that ..read more
