This is the second trip this year.
Following Cheryl's advice I placed the water bottle between my 2 sleeping bags. The water was cold but it didn't freeze.
Thank you, Cheryl!

Lol, this is what happens when the city boys go exploring in Northern Ontario...Those are moose tracks guys! The prints themselves are larger and indistinguishable due to the soft mud, but the gait is a dead giveaway that they aren't bear tracks. But I guess these guys have very little experience with moose and bear tracks.
I still like their channel though! They give me a good chuckle once in a while with their sca ..read more

Added some edits above. For sleeping, it can help to have a small warm blank (or I use my fleece) to wrap around your feet. A hat is a must and a buff. I pull the hat down to the rip of my nose, and the buff up around my chin. The head and neck are warm. I layer in my bag, as I am a cold sleeper, so a zip-up fleece on more torso helps. I also stuff a down throw blanket in the bottom of the bag, and I might pull it up along the inner zipper (I will double bag), then I can drag it over me in my bag, or tuck it around any cold areas.

Thanks, Cheryl,
I plan to put my water bottle in the sleeping bag next time. Good idea with the sock.
Live and learn...

Well done!
Keep your water bottle in a sock in your sleeping bag. Double-check the lid. The sock with absorb any leakage if you miss it, and keep the water from burning you, or chilling you if it cools. I prefer to use boiled and then slightly cooled water (depends on what your bottle is made of, so try it at home first so you don't melt it) - I tuck it near my core when I climb in, and I am nicely warmed. Large water containers should be turned upside down and buried until needed. There is lots of great advice in the Winter Camping sections of this forum :)

It is my first-time winter camping in a summer tent at -23° C. I chose to go to Algonquin Park, an area I didn't explore before.
With a forecast of 2 sunny days and a minimum of -15°C during the night, I jumped at the occasion.
They were wrong about the night temperatures. I would do some things differently, but that's how you learn.
I was taken by surprise by a titmouse that landed on my palm out of nowhere. Another surprise waited for me in the parking lot. A pine marten. He seemed to be well-habituated with people.
Besides the summer tent, I had 2 sleeping pads: a closed-cell and a self-in ..read more
