The 2023-24 National Scholastic Surfing Association is two weeks into the new season and a pattern is already emerging. The cream is quickly rising to the top. Of the nine divisions run at Salt Creek in the second stop of the Open season, four of them were a repeat winner from week 1 at Ventura. One division that had a different winner come out on top, was the Men's Open. Brothers Oliver and Owen Rowe have always been a force when their names appear in a line up, but this summer the two have taken their surfing to another level. Competing in the Sun Diego Am Slam summer series, the pair have combined to take the win in 5 of the 6 titles in their respective divisions. Lower Trestles in San Clemente is known for three major events. The US Board Riders finals, the WSL finals and the USA Surfing National Championships. With the boardriders done w few weeks ago and the WSL still two months away, it was fron and center for the USA Championships. Surfers from Florida, Hawaii and California that surfed all season long trying to get an invite to the prestigious event, filled the beach side for 5 days, battling through round after round until there was just 1 left in each of the eight divisions. Stop one of three of the 2023 Rip Curl Grom Search is in the books after this weekend's event at Huntington Beach. The event, which gives the top groms in the country a chance at advancing to the finals at the wave pool at the Palm Springs Surf Club, drew a nearly capacity field of stellar athletes ready to do battle. At stake was $500 to each winner but a change in advancement was made from prior years. The Surf team from San Juan Hills High School had a huge day at the Inland Schools portion of the Scholastic Surf Series State Championships on Sunday, winning three of the five events and the overall title of the best in the state. They won the Men's Shortboard and both the Women's long and shortboard events and came in second in the men's longboard. On Saturday, San Dieguito won the title for best coastal team in the state. After taking a bit of a break due to bad weather, the Western Surfing Association got back in action this past weekend. Having been off since their contest on Dec 3rd and 4th, the aspiring surf stars were back at it. Back at it with a purpose. "These kids are surfing WSA in order to qualify for prime which is part of the process for getting to USA champs, " said WSA's Carolyn Krammer. " We are the feeding program. The 6th annual Jacks Surfboards Pro 3000 at Huntington Beach kicked off the World Surf League Qualifying Series season over the weekend with over 140 surfers hoping to get off to a fast start on their quest to climb the ladder in the WSL. When the last horn sounded, it was women's defending champion Sawyer Lindblad going back-to-back and Santa Cruz veteran John Mel that stood victorious. The 8th annual Am Slam Summer Surf Series hosted by the Sun Diego Boardshops got off to a roaring start at Pacific Beach last weekend, crowning week 1 champions in 6 divisions. This was the first of four events that will be held before crowning a season-end champion as well as all the weekly champs along the way. The series rounds out with stops at the Ocean Beach Pier (July 8-9), San Clemente Pier (August 5-6) and Mission Beach (Sept. 30-Oct 1).
