Saturday Sunday As the final small game weekend, I continued to put off my pursuit of wallydogs and suckers and chase tree rats instead. I can tell you all one thing for sure, I'm not ever going rifle hunting without my new trigger stick. After getting used to another piece of equipment to wrangle and carry, it's a lifesaver. I've kept going out on public land for squirrels when I get the opportunity. I've really been tuning in my longer distance shots with the .22. I also just picked up a Primos trigger stick so that I'm not always searching for a tree to steady my rifle against - haven't used it yet. I've said this many times, but squirrel hunting is the most challenging type of hunting that I've experienced. The little buggers are so crafty and quick. I used up my last 5 bullets on one squirrel that just kept moving and staying juuuuuust hidden enough. I did get his hand, I could see it in the knockers, but he outlasted me. That being said, I was able to get a nice, big fox squirrel and a beautiful grey. Sure, it was too windy and I didn't head out until midday, but with that sun... I have a 13 year old grandchild that has been going squirrel hunting a few times with me. The last time we were out, there were other hunters with beagles in the same area. Was out running my beagles on snowshoes this past weekend in the northern lower. Got to thinking how in the lates 80’s thru the mid 90’s I could find them all over. Now they are gone from 90% of the areas I use to hunt them. Literally just small remnant populations left here and there. Just curious if things are as bad in other people’s spots?
