Hello, I was talking with LCS to see if they would hold a porcupine avoidance clinic. I told them I would see what sort of interest there would be on the forum here. Just let me know if you would attend if they were able to hold one. Obviously final cost and dates could change your availability but just for now let me know. If we are able to get a large enough group I think they will consider it ..read more

The state biologist drew up a drumming survey route so our new chapter could monitor the impact of a habitat project in the years to come. I kicked it off bright & early this morning with my kid. This mountain hasn't had any work for many, many years so I would have been happy with anything, TBH... I was pleasantly surprised to record 3 different drummers and also had another bird (young hen?) cross the road. I also flushed 2 more grouse while getting a site ready for another small... Hi everybody, On Thursday, April 25th, our RGS chapter has an order of American hazelnuts coming in from the county CSD. Unfortunately this is midweek and most of our chapter members are busy with work. I need to get them in the ground & can't wait until Saturday, as I have work that weekend. This is a small first planting (100-125 seedlings), and I really just need somebody to help me carry some stuff in (can't drive right up due to deer fence) and also help me cut tree tubes down to... Grouse in "grouse-less" counties south of I-80

Dog wasn't at the top of her game Saturday at a field trial, seemed out of sorts & doing too much of her own thing, so I decided to take her on a conditioning run in a couple new spots close to home, just to work on handling, etc. It didn't look too promising, except for drinking beer and shooting off fireworks (judging from the trash heap), old strip-mine land in a general area that's never produced anything for me except for a nice chicken-of-the-woods mushroom... Or triple the cost of the pheasant stamp. This needs to be a be a self supporting program. Only a government agency thinks they are doing a good job while losing $3 million each year. Very expensive pheasants ..read more

If anybody wants to dip their toe into the world of upland bird-hunting with dogs (especially grouse and woodcock), our RGS chapter will be hosting an introductory event at Lion Country Supply. And of course lots of this stuff will be applicable for pheasant hunting as well. I will not be there myself (have to coordinate a wildlife planting on the mtn on the same weekend), but you will be in capable hands ..read more

There’s a rooster pheasant that is living around the farm. Once we took the corn off I figured he would have left like the other ones so I was thinking about buying a hen and seeing if they would reproduce but know nothing about pheasant breeding. Up the road at our other farm there’s a rooster and there was two hens but I haven’t seen the hens but my uncle said the other week he seen a hen so it will be interesting to watch. I know it’s possible but to a neighbor having a rooster and hen... Should I buy my buddy a wife ..read more

2023 grouse flush rates

Preliminary flush rate count for this year. Best in 10 yrs supposedly. They might junk the summer grouse sighting count as a metric because it does not correlate anymore (for whatever reason staff are not seeing/reporting grouse even in the good years). The Christmas bird count correlates with flush rates over time So that makes them believe the summer count is off. Just keeps going down and down ..read more
