Little Things I Love My personal, but completely objective opinion, is that Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve 19 is THE most important tool to know and use for post production in 2024. If you’re new here, you’re my new best friend - welcome! My name is Chadwick. I’m a 42-year-old New York-based finishing editor and a certified DaVinci Resolve master trainer with 20 years of consecutive daily professional experience in video editing for national broadcast commercials and churches. The only reason I tell you that today is because I am obsessed with the small details and “perfection” (my commer ..read more

Creative Video Tips

Single-point tracking in DaVinci Resolve Fusion is great because the results are completely controllable. So let’s learn how to track, even when patterns go offscreen or behind objects, using a simple text callout graphic. As a bonus, at the end, you can discover how to separate tracked fusion graphics from the footage so you can freely color-correct footage on the color page later without using compound clips. Tricky Little Things in DaVinci Resolve - Episode 4
Creative Video Tips

As a professional video editor, I love clip markers and I love DaVinci Resolve AND I LOVE using the Index panel to navigate quickly for finding specific moments.  But what I don’t love is seeing a marker on all of my source clips video AND audio tracks. I just want to see one marked part, the video part, so it’s fast to jump between them on a timeline. It turns out you can quickly remove those pesky audio markers once they are on the timeline by locking the video track so it’s left alone and going up to the mark menu and all the way down to delete all markers. I’m Chadwick and I have more ..read more

DaVinci Resolve has a few odd things that are actually powerful features, like the database model for storing projects. Still, it takes some getting used to if you come from other editing software. One thing that isn’t obvious is that you CAN COPY and PASTE from one project to another with dynamic project switching turned on. And there is even a dropdown menu on the edit page to quickly access the other open projects without going to the project manager. So anyways, today I have more of those little things I wish I had known when I started working in Resolve a decade ago, and they’re all chap ..read more

Tricky Little Things in DaVinci Resolve - Episode 2
Creative Video Tips

DaVinci Resolve REVEALS new editing techniques to me all the time. It’s kind of like how you can REVEAL the contents of multiple bins at once by shift or command mouse-clicking them in the media pool. To me, this wasn’t the most intuitive thing when I first started editing with DaVinci. So welcome to episode two of the little things I use to work faster and easier in Resolve as a professional commercial editor. Keep Finder Folders I always suggest you keep you your project nice and tidy in a job folder with predefined nested folders.  Sometimes you want to keep that exact same organizatio ..read more

I’ve used DaVinci Resolve for over 10 years, but it seems like every week, I’m still learning something new, like hitting the dropdown NEXT to the search button to search the entire project by filename for a matching clip or timeline.  Or there’s this little trick to CLOSE UP ALL of your expanded BINS by holding down the option or alt key while clicking on the master bin.   Nice! Right? In just a few minutes, I’ll show you some lesser-known tricks I use all the time, and hopefully, you’ll find them useful too. Lasso Trim I call this the “normal edit mode lasso trim.” Anytime yo ..read more

Learn how to automate the process of backing up your DaVinci Resolve Network Library, the shared postgreSQL server, with all of your projects on a timed based schedule. The cool thing about this wonderful free script, is that you can even place the files to a cloud synced backup location like Google Drive or Dropbox. Seth Goldin is the mastermind behind this great script and he also has a course that is worth looking into if you manage a DaVinci Resolve post facility with multiple editors working in the same projects. It’s really great! Links for all the resources used are here: Github Scripts ..read more

Set the Color Space Transform Inputs to Rec.2020 and Rec.2100 HLG (Scene) and you’re good to go. Sometimes if you are still dealing with highlights that are too bright you can tone map those down with the HDR 203 Nits checkbox to help pull those back into the timeline color space and gamma (which in this case is Rec.709 ..read more

Blackmagic Camera TO Cloud TO Resolve 18.6
Creative Video Tips
by Chadwick Shoults

Blackmagic Design just released DaVinci Resolve 18.6, and along with that is a new phone app that lets you upload your files directly to the Blackmagic Cloud. Any editor worldwide will have their project populated with the clips as soon as the videographer hits stop; work can start immediately. I've never set this up before because I learned about this 30 minutes ago and I can't wait to try this out so if you're interested like me, let's see how hard this is to figure out without instructions. I just logged into cloud.blackmagicdesign to try to get some storage so I can use the phone, and it ..read more
