Hired an electrician to add 220 volt outlet for a/c window unit in mobile home. All the wiring is run outdoors in conduit except the last 4' will be underground in conduit. I'm no electrician by any means but not sure it's done correctly. 1) The wire he used is 10/2 Romex NM-B wire for 20 amp a/c unit 2) Wire is In conduit from the outdoor panel, it runs on the ground along the side of the trailer. It then runs up the side a few feet to a disconnect box mounted on side the trailer. 3)... Read more ..read more

Hooking up new 220 circuit

I'm running #6 wire for a 220 circuit for the welder I picked up from Bob. Told the guy at the electrical store that I needed wire for a 50 amp circuit about 30' from the box. Also bought the 220 outlet and 50 amp breaker. As you see in the pic I have a very empty breaker box. Just 4 outlets on one circuit and 3 overhead lights on the other. I've always read / heard use white for ground. And as you see in the box that is how it was wired by the electrician who put in my service. But the... Read more ..read more

Plug works with Siemens breaker but not Stab-Lok?

Hi, I am installing a plug for a Dyna-Glo Workhorse electric garage heater, it needs a Nema 6-30 plug, and a 30 amp double pole circuit breaker. I got it all hooked up and was dismayed to see that, even though I could read 120 volts off each pole, it was not powering the unit. When I tried it on a different breaker panel, with Siemens breakers, it worked fine. I thought my Stab-Lok breaker was faulty so I bought a new one, with the same negative result. I'm just looking for some insight... Read more ..read more

"Modern" Square D question

As the sparkies around these parts claim that they have no supply, I'm searching around for a new Square D breaker panel. My question is: Are the modern Square D (AFI) type breaker panels -- like the HOM2448L125PGC -- still capable of supporting "old" (non-AFI) circuit breakers? We've got a panel full of pre-AFI thermal breakers that are in still in great shape. I can't imagine that Square D would wish to fill the landfills with what are now "non-NEC-compliant" breakers, but... Read more ..read more

Hello all, I wired a new Lutron dimmer to fix a burned out old dimmer that was very old in a three switch box. Box looks like this is a 2 way switch setup each dimmer with two black wires and one red (load I think) as there is another dimmer in the dining room same setup. So this is what I did and not sure it is right although the lights are all working it seems at least the ones in the hallway I replaced the one dimmer on. - Three Light Switch Box - One Dimmer burned out - Has (Two... Seems like it should be simple but maybe I’m overthinking it. I bought a 12volt dc counter that has a ground wire and a power wire and it counts every time it receives power. I’m wanting it to only power on with 12 volts but currently down to 7 volts powers it on. I’m trying to keep it very simple and compact and not use relays and such. Any ideas? Thinking maybe just resisters? How would I know what resistance I need ..read more

Hi all, I’m a newb here. I need expert code info. I’m doing a DIY wiring project - power to a dock. I don’t own a NEC but have been Trying to educate myself on the requirements any way I can. The feeder to the dock is 220, from a breaker in the main (house) panel. One requirement Is that there must be a disconnect on shore near the dock landing. There will be a sub panel on the dock. I have two questions. First, does the disconnect have to break the neutral? I would think this would be... Read more ..read more

I moved into an old house recently. Well, the wiring is too old and has not been replaced since then. I experience low voltage during the night and sometimes power fluctuation. As I'm living with my mother and two-year-old baby, I'm scared if anything will happen during the night and we'll be without electricity. Is there any emergency electrical repair available, or should I change the whole wiring system ..read more
