I imagine that there's a simple answer to this but, despite looking, I can't find it. Like this one: As it no doubt adds a fraction to the cost, I guess that the bracket wouldn't be supplied if it wasn't required by some regulation in some circumstances. But what regulation and what circumstances? My best guess is that it's for use as... Read more ..read more

I recently acquired a 16" car radiator fan that I intend to mount on some perspex for use as an extractor fan on my brew hut window. The fan states it is 12v 120 watt so I understand that makes it 10 amp. I have a unit that converts mains supply to 12v 15 amps from some spotlights I used to have. Will the fan burn out or am I all good ..read more

Greetings, I am homeowner and looking to confirm if I will need earth boding to water pipes. There is already earth boding near Gas meter and the gas copper pipe enters the house. Water main supply is via blue plastic pipe (MDPE) which then connects to plastic pipes and also some copper pipes (pipes under boiler are copper pipes, central heating pipes (flow and return pipes) are combination - somewhere copper somewhere plastic). The consumer unit is metal box with RCD protection, the are 2x... Read more ..read more

Will a new metal CU be mandatory or advisory

I've just moved into a flat and want to get an electric shower fitted. The installation has passed a recent EICR done by the seller but warn that the current CU is a plastic type. There is sufficient room to fit extra breakers. So that I can be best prepared when meeting the electrician, is it mandatory to have the CU changed for a metal one because of the new circuit being added or just advisable. Money is tight after the purchase and I don't want to pay out if I don't have to. Thanks ..read more

My Came electric gates started to trip out every few days, resetting was ok but then they wouldn't reset. I checked the sensors and they are ok. A gate guy came to look at them and with a callout charge, he said one of the motors had gone. Is price was around £1,300 for the motor and instalation, the motor, a Came Frog-A is readily available for £259 including VAT so he's charging £1000 for the instalation! I've disconnected the motor and the control board still doesn't reset, any ideas... Read more ..read more

Hello folks, Apologies in advanced if this is a daft question about earthing my data equipment in garage, but I'd rather be safe than sorry... At the moment, we have a CU installed in the garage for lights and sockets, located at the front of the garage. At the back of my garage we house IT data equipment within a data cabinet, including network switches, CCTV etc. Some of these network devices, including the cabinet itself, allow us to attach an earth cable to the housing of the metallic...
