“The graduation data released this week strongly suggests that the graduation rate did not change pre- and post-pandemic, which raises serious concerns. These students entered high school in the fall of 2019 and had to abruptly transition to remote learning in March 2020. It is well-known that during that time, many students dropped out, became disengaged, and stopped attending school. Given this context, it is incredibly difficult to comprehend how the graduation rate for this group did not drop compared to pre-pandemic rates. By Amy Lee Funes, Ed Trust–NY and Raising NY Early Childhood Policy and Advocacy Lab member My son Leo is an active, happy four-year-old preschooler on the Autism Spectrum. As with any child, he has many needs — whether it is having access to special diets, programs that support his development, or anything that comes up day-to-day. When Leo was younger, I had to make the difficult decision as a single mom to leave the workforce permanently due to the lack of affordable child care in my Queens, New York community. The Empire State Child Credit — which provides up to $100 per child for children ..read more

Completing the Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) and other state aid forms can open doors to more postsecondary opportunities by making college more accessible and affordable for low-income backgrounds, immigrants, and first-generation students. Students who complete the FAFSA are more likely to enroll in college immediately after graduation. Yet by the end of June 2023, over 40% of high school seniors across New York State did not complete the FAFSA, meaning millions of dollars in financial aid — including an estimated $226 million in Pell Grants — were left behind.
