Have you ever wondered why Earth is called the blue planet? It’s because water covers about 70% of its surface. Considering this amount of water available, it seems obvious that it is abundant. However, 97% of the Earth’s water is saline consisting of 1,335 million km3, and 2% is frozen freshwater locked up in glaciers, polar ice caps, soil etc. and is unavailable for use. As a result, there is only 2,04,000 km3 of freshwater available for consumption, which is about 0.5 to 1% of the total freshwater available.
