Intuitive Eating I get asked “What is intuitive eating?” a lot so- here we go:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The term intuitive eating was coined in 1995 as the title of a book by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. The ideas are rooted in work by early pioneers such as Susie Orbach, who published “Fat is a Feminist Issue” in 1978, and Geneen Roth, who has written about emotional eating since 1982.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Intuitive eating is built on the principle that diets don’t work and that lifestyle changes and personal care are more important for long-term health. Diet Culture We are all born as intuitive ..read more

What is body liberation?

Body Liberation   Body Liberation is freedom from all outside expectations of how your body should be/look, even your own. My own personal view is that body liberation is the end goal of becoming body confident. This means that you don’t think about your body because you are more than your body. On days when you have a negative thought about your body, you hear the thought and then remember “well I know that that isn’t true so whatever” and move on with your day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I often get asked how I feel about my body and the truth is that I don’t think about my body that much. I know that ..read more

What is body neutrality?

Being body neutral Body neutrality is accepting your body as it is. This means finding peace with how it looks and its abilities. Many people prefer body neutrality over body confidence because they see body confidence (accepting and liking the appearance of your body) as unrealistic. Unlike body confidence, body neutrality is really about feeling neutral (I mean… it’s in the name). This means that you don’t need to have positive feelings towards your body in order to be body neutral. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’d argue against this because I believe that feeling neutral about your body is the firs ..read more

Body Confidence Body confidence is all about a person’s own relationship with their body. Our feelings about our bodies can be positive, neutral, or negative. The way we feel about ourselves can be influenced by external factors and our own internalised beliefs about bodies. Body confidence makes us challenge negative influences and beliefs so we can start to accept and perhaps even love our bodies. The goal of the body confidence movement is to address unrealistic beauty standards and to build people’s confidence.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In my own work I help individuals, mums, and teens to build ..read more

What is HAES?

Health at every size I often get asked about HAES, so, in short, it means that it’s possible to be healthy at every size. Many of the beliefs people have around health and size are actually incorrect information that we’ve been fed by the diet industry.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Health at Every Size first appeared in the 1960s, advocating that the changing culture toward aesthetics and beauty standards had negative health and psychological repercussions to fat people. Because the slim and fit body type had become the acceptable standard of attractiveness, fat people were going to great pains to lose ..read more

Body Positive Parenting Body Positive Parenting is the name of my programme for helping parents to be body positive role-models for their kids.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I mostly work with mums who I help to go from feeling uncomfortable in their bodies, avoiding the family pictures, and hiding beneath layers of clothes to accepting their bodies and feeling good about the woman looking back at them in the mirror.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The mums I work with become body confident so they can raise their kids to be body confident too. They raise their kids in a body positive environment. I give them all th ..read more

The fat acceptance movement So first of all, it’s important to make it clear that body positivity is not about feeling positive about your body. Feeling good in your body is called Body Confidence. Body positivity is a political movement that addresses the oppression of marginalised and discriminated against bodies. Body Positivity is rooted in the fat acceptance movement. This movement started in the 60s and later expanded into the body positive movement. Fat acceptance is all about treating fat bodies with respect and eliminating fat-shaming. It’s also about acceptance and reclaiming the wo ..read more

Here is the truth about how I felt about my body as a teen… I look like a confident happy teen in this photo right? Wrong… Let me tell you what was really going on: ? I had a problem with my jaw which meant that my face was crooked, my front teeth didn’t touch so I couldn’t bite into things probably (eating a sambo was tricky business) and I often had people ask me what was wrong with my face. ? I felt way too old to still be wearing braces. I’m 19 in this photo (not old I know, but I felt childish to be a student with braces). ? I had horrific internalised fatphobia. I thought that I was ..read more
