Pros and Cons of self-employment
Writeo Blog

I started my business, Writeo, back in August 2020. What’s that, five months? Absolute veteran, mate. So, with this wealth of knowledge and experience under my belt, this week’s blog comes in the form of a pros and cons list of going freelance, based on those five months. Let’s start with the pros, or benefits, of going self-employed. No Commute The first benefit of going self-employed is definitely the commute, or should I say the lack of commute. I’ve spent all my working life driving to and from workplaces, classing 25 minutes as an absolute win in terms of travel time. Nobody likes a comm ..read more

It is dark when I wake up. The enormous, hairless, two-legged cats snore with open mouths and motionless bodies. I am stealth. I creep towards their odd looking faces and scratch the material on the bed frame. The female cat awakens and shouts which brings me great joy. The male cat stirs and mutters my name. I sit beyond our bedroom door and wait. I give them ample time (five seconds) to put food in my bowl, yet they do nothing. I return into the darkness, staying low to avoid the flailing movements of the large, male cat, but his left paw connects with my thigh. A fluke. I circle the bed on ..read more

How Can a freelancer, an outsider, understand your business?
Writeo Blog
by James Russell

Welcome to Writeo! Where copywriting connects and converts. Today, I’m talking about hiring a freelance copywriter for your business. I’ll discuss some of the many benefits of doing so, and answer an age-old question in the world of copywriting. Let’s start with the question. Can an outsider write about your business? I get it. It's your business. Your baby. You don't want some outsider with thick, luxurious, curly hair rocking up and writing about your baby. It’s a me! James, owner of Writeo and lover of words. But here's the thing. I know your business as well as you know yours, and can app ..read more

What ChatGPT means for copywriters, and probably, the world.
Writeo Blog

Before you ask whether ChatGPT can revolutionise marketing, provide decent SEO briefs, or wash your pots, you need to ask yourself one crucial question. Have you watched ANY film featuring AI from the past 60 years? Based on the LinkedIn posts I’m seeing from gleeful marketers looking to save cash and sack their copywriter, the answer is no. In today’s blog, then, I’ll tackle the evil beast that is ChatGPT, exploring the key point that everyone seems to be ignoring. That AI never works out and it always tries to kill people in the end. I’ll also provide some actual, genuine opinions on it, if ..read more

What is a Copywriter?
Writeo Blog
by James Russell

Fellow copywriters will know the pain of being asked what they do for a living. It’s a classic small-talk question, one to which you’ll have probably replied “copywriter” which in turn, was greeted by a blank look. “I write things for like… Businesses and stuff.” Was perhaps your reply (if you’re me). This will have been met with either further contortion of the face, or an awkward smile as the recipient of this knowledge pretends to know what you mean. So, let’s break down what a copywriter is, and next time you get asked this question you can just load this blog and tell them to read on. Th ..read more

Surviving Lockdown as a Freelancer
Writeo Blog

We’ve been in lockdown for what feels like 3,000 years. Future generations won’t look back on this in history books, because they’ll be under a tier system that limits their book usage based on their shoe size and hair colour. Remember the first lockdown? It was much easier to handle as an office worker. It was sunny, people were making banana bread and we were a bit excited to abandon the office. Lots of us even got to swap co-workers for pets. We clapped on the streets and all was well. Well, it wasn’t well. It was terrifying and the mental health and death toll on this country was (and stil ..read more

Writeo Blog

And which social media platform is best for business? Welcome to Tuesday, which is apparently the most productive day of the week. I personally don’t have a most productive day of the week but who am I to argue with science? Anyway, this week’s question is: What’s the point of social media? I’m not asking this question as an angsty user sick of endless scrolling, but more from a business perspective, particularly around which platforms work best for which purpose. Let’s start with Facebook. What’s the Point of Facebook? Facebook is great for seeing what people from school are up to and getting ..read more

How to cold email
Writeo Blog

Andrew 3000 knows. In this blog, I’m going to give you a quick (ish) guide on how to cold email. I’ll cover what to include in a cold email, who to send it to, and give you a bit of a pep talk to ease any worries you might have about the process. But first, a little about me and why cold-emailing is the method I’ve used as the main thrust of Writeo’s marketing. Cold Calling vs Cold Emailing – An Introverts Perspective When you start a business, you’re frequently told you’ll need to do a lot of cold calls to get things moving. I’m an incredibly introverted person, so the idea of cold-calling h ..read more
