The Value of Volunteering – Always a Win-Win April is National Volunteer Appreciation month, an opportunity to recognize, applaud, and share the value of our volunteers at the Food Bank of South Jersey. Volunteers have always served a critical role in our mission to feed our neighbors in need, and their significance to our organization cannot be overstated. From packing, sorting, and distribution support; to assisting our efforts to teach neighbors about nutrition and healthy living; and providing critical office aid to help neighbors apply for SNAP benefits, the value of volunteers in changi ..read more

But, sometimes, purchasing healthy foods feels out of reach when you’re living on a tight budget. Since 1985, Food Bank of South Jersey has worked to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry by distributing safe and nutritious food, providing nutrition education and cooking courses, and helping our neighbors develop sustainable pathways to improve their lives. One of the ways we can support our neighbors is by offering aid when it comes to applying for government-funded benefit prog ..read more

STORIES FROM OUR NEIGHBORS – SHEILA   “People need help right now. …Tomorrow is Too late for some people.” Last December, Sheila, a compassionate nurse dedicated to providing in-home care, faced a sudden and life-altering event when she slipped on black ice. The resulting injuries meant she could no longer work, unraveling the stability she had painstakingly built as a single parent. “It was devastating because everything I had built up, it was just gone,” Sheila shared. “We lost our house. I’m still trying to get back on my feet.” Shelia turned to the Food Bank of South Jersey’s network ..read more

Aspiring To Be Better Through Innovation While I don’t typically make New Year’s resolutions, I do try to focus on my aspirations for the year – broader objectives that I hope to work toward. At the Food Bank, we have an ongoing aspiration: to always try and do better. Yes, it’s simple, but it also reflects our efforts to examine and re-examine how we do things, and how we can better serve our neighbors. Last year, we worked hard on this aspiration, and one way we did it was through a focus on innovation. We launched a new senior feeding program that has served our neighbors with more variety ..read more

Whether it’s always realized, we tell the story of our Operations department in big and small ways. From how many millions of pounds of food leave our warehouse each year – 18.5 million in 2022, more than 22 million in 2023 – to the multiple places from which we procure that food – from regional grocers, nationwide suppliers, local hunters, and more – Operations is the backbone of the work that we do here at the Food Bank of South Jersey.  Without our Operations team, much of what we do would be impossible. Taking in donations from a large food drive? Not without careful synchronization o ..read more

Bridging the Gap: Understanding and Addressing Food Insecurity in South Jersey Exploring Food Insecurity: A Global Challenge Food is a basic human need, yet it remains an elusive necessity for millions worldwide. Though food insecurity may be defined in multiple ways, they all reach the same common denominator: people suffer from food insecurity when they don’t have enough life-sustaining food to eat and don’t know where their next meal will come from. In 2022, the USDA reported that, nationally, the number of people living in food-insecure households increased by 10 million to 44 million peop ..read more
