Images made by me using AI, Photoshop and Canva Hey there, φιλοι*! Guess what? We have TWO hot-off-the-presses articles for you this month! One actually went up a couple of weeks ago, so maybe more lukewarm-off-the-presses, but some of you may not have seen it. And now there's a second one for your reading (and listening...and maybe dancing!) pleasure... First up, we're continuing our long-neglected "Get to Know a God/dess" series with an article that's all about the mysterious Greek god, Pan. Ever wondered about this deity who's part goat, part party-starter, and all magic? We're di ..read more

Get Outta Town (Athens, that is)

Well, hello! Remember me?  I know, I know...it's been ages. Apologies. But now there's some new content (finally). The latest article is...Ta Dah! - "7 Perfect Day Trips from Athens". Too many travelers treat Athens and it's environs as a necessary evil - an inconvenient hiccup in their ultimate goal of getting to an island somewhere.  This makes me crazy.   Athens is a bit nuts, I'll admit, but is there a more vibrant, historical, fascinating city in the world? Maybe, but I haven't found it. So I'm all in favor of spending part of any trip to Greece in the city. But also OUT o ..read more

View from my balcony in Chania, Crete. Griffins on the balcony! If you've been following The Greekish Life on ,social ,media - and I hope you are - you know I've been away on an epic trip around Greece. I'm back now, and hoo boy, there's a lot to cover! The trip started in mid-May and finished up in late June, which is the longest I've ever travelled anywhere. It was amazing. And frankly, I could have stayed longer, but for the terrible Greek summer heat which was kicking in in earnest. It makes me lethargic and turns me into a cranky, schvitzing goblin hissing at the sun and ducking from one ..read more

We have a winner for our 2nd Annual Recipe Contest! Take a look at the beautiful eggplant recipe sent in by one of our readers and TGL Facebook group members! You may remember we had an article a while back about lathera, those classic Greek dishes that feature olive oil. This recipe is just such a one - healthy, olive-oil based and vegetarian (even vegan if you leave off the feta). It can definitely be a full meal, but I would also consider it as a side dish or even meze. Why not? Eggplant is a wonderfully versatile thing! Enjoy this lovely recipe, and let us know if you try it ..read more

It's our 2nd Annual Recipe Contest!

Image from Unsplash You know we love our Greek food around here, and we love it even better when it's quick and easy. That's why so many of the recipes I put up are "Greekish" rather than strictly Greek. We don't always need to spend all day in the kitchen, right? So I'm throwing the doors open for another The Greekish Life recipe contest! The rules are the same as last year: The rules: It must be a proper meal, not a sandwich or snack (a salad that doubles as a meal is okay) It must be ready to be served in around 30 minutes (40 max) It must be written out like a recipe with measurements an ..read more

Hammams, Island-Hopping and ABBA

Image by Pexels So I'm just back from Greece, again. I was fortunate enough to be able to travel back to the motherland this spring, and...I miss it already. It seems I'm either in Greece, planning to go to Greece, or missing Greece. I have no other factory settings. As I mentioned in my last blog post, this trip was more island-hoppy than the previous one last fall, which seemed to involve more medieval walled towns and castles. This trip was islands, beaches, lots of blue and white, and all the classic "hits" of a Greek vacation. I was happy to have planned more time in Athens this time aro ..read more

How To Make Your Own Genealogy Book (Without Crying and Screaming Like a Five-Year-Old)
The Greekish Life Blog

Photo by Pexels.com I made my first genealogy book in 2015, and another one a year later. The whole purpose was to collate all the documents, photos and stories in one place, and to see if I could make it aesthetically pleasing while I was at it. (That art degree had to be good for something...) So off I went to the site where I'd easily made travel books and some "this year with my family" albums, and the results pleased me beyond words. I've read a lot on social media from people who are stuck in their genealogy research, not due to a brick wall or any of the usual obstacles, but rather, w ..read more

A New Gallery - Mani!
The Greekish Life Blog

As promised, I'm putting up the first of what I hope will be many galleries and articles inspired by my latest trip to Greece last fall. This was part of my ten day road trip around the Peloponnesos, and it did not disappoint. Have you been to Mani? If you have, I'm sure you have great memories of it's stern, rocky beauty, it's deep history and it's dazzling beaches. If you've never been, click here to get a little virtual tour of this amazing region of Greece. Known in times past for it's infamous feuds, fierce independence and generally badassery, Mani is literally Greece's middle finger ..read more

Greece in the Time of Coronavirus, Or, How I Spent my COVID Vacation
The Greekish Life Blog

Hi all, I'm back! You didn't know I'd gone to Greece for a month? Well, then, I guess I know someone who isn't in The Greekish Life Facebook group! Or who isn't following on Instagram. I'll let it slide. This time. All kidding aside...wow. For one, this was the longest vacation I'd ever taken (retirement rocks), and while it was an unusual trip in many ways, due to personal issues and COVID-19, it was everything my body and soul needed. This was my fourth attempt at a visit to Greece in the last year and a half. Personal issues cancelled the first attempt, and coronavirus restrictions knocked ..read more
