Tree of Life Art Installation

For the worship series on the Book of Revelation, I wanted to build a Tree of Life. In the last chapter of Revelation, it says, “On each side of the river is the tree of life, which produces twelve crops of fruit, bearing its fruit each month. The tree’s leaves are for the healing of the nations.” (Rev 22:2) My idea was to build an ominous looking black paper tree, but during the process, a child asked me if she could help. The Tree of Life took a different direction – one more whimsical, colorful, and playful. It wasn’t what I planned, but sometimes inviting the child guides you on a differen ..read more

Palm Sunday: Dueling Parades
Still Waters Blog

This Palm Sunday reading centers around two different parades that happen in Jerusalem: the one led by Pilate and the one led by Jesus. The script is designed to be interactive with the whole congregation. I first set up the reading by sharing the book, A Pig Parade Is a Terrible Idea by Michael Ian Black. The script was inspired by a quote from John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg, The Last Week.  Two processions entered Jerusalem on a spring day in the year 30. . . One was a peasant procession, the other an imperial procession. From the east, Jesus rode a donkey down the Mouth of Olive ..read more

“The Bible Is” Worship Series

This is a 6-part series focusing on our relationship with the Bible. Each Sunday looked at the Bible through a different lens. Sanctuary art For the sanctuary art, I was inspired by Lee Seung-Taek’s “Paper Tree” display. Since we were focusing on the Bible, I wanted to combine this art display with black out poetry. Black out poetry is where you take a page from a book and circle words that resonate with you. Using a black Sharpie, you black out all the words except the words you circled. The words remaining is the poem you have created. Materials: large branches tape paper scissors black st ..read more

Palm Sunday: a Donkey Who Carried a King

For Palm Sunday, I used the book A Donkey Who Carried a King by R. C. Sproul. The book is divided into four parts. I will only put excerpts here to give you an idea of how I split up the story. I gave the narrator parts to older kids and had the younger kids read the parts of the donkey and other characters. NARRATOR Many years ago, there was a little donkey named Davey. He lived in a village close to the holy city of Jerusalem. He was too young to work, so he was kept in his pen. He had brothers and sisters, but none of them could play with him because they had jobs to do. Sometimes they ca ..read more

This is a 5-part series focusing on exploring spiritual care practices during the season of Lent. Stephen Macchia, in his book “Crafting a Rule of Life” says, All of us have an unwritten personal rule of life that we are following, some with great clarity, others unknowingly. We wake at certain times, get ready for our days in particular ways, use our free time for assorted purposes and practice rhythms of work, hobbies, worship, vacation and so on. There is already a rule in place that you are following today. Isn’t it time to give up our unwritten rule and prayerfully write one that more cl ..read more

Building a Succulent Labyrinth

In San Francisco, walking was surely an increased activity that happened during the pandemic. Everything was closed and locked down. Slow streets started popping up everywhere in the city – one of them being right on Lake Street, where the church resides. As a church, we weren’t allowed to open our doors because any gathering of people was prohibited. But what’s a church if it’s not the people? It’s just an empty building. That time really tested our identity as a faith community. If our mission is “led by the compassion of Jesus and the creativity & mystery of the Spirit, we are an open ..read more

Painted Canvas Banners

I was commissioned to do art work for Montreat College Conference. I haven’t done anything of this scale by myself, so it was a wonderful opportunity to challenge myself. Plus, I was able to do a technique inspired by the artist Simon Hantai’s Tabulas collection, that I saw in Paris at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. He uses a folding method to tie canvas and paint over it. Since the theme of the conference is “Keep Going,” I used the words “On the Way.” As we are encouraged to Keep Going, it means we are actually already On the Way. Where is God guiding us? What detours do we take? What path d ..read more

Complex Characters in the Bible
Still Waters Blog
by Theresa E Cho

This worship series covers complicated characters in the Bible such as Jacob, David, Solomon, Esther, and Paul. I created a macrame banner because I wanted to do something that represent how our relationships with God, each other, and the world are entangled. What makes these characters as well as us complicated is that no one is 100% good or 100% bad. In this series, we took a good look at these characters and wrestled with how to reconcile some terrible acts (such as David’s sexual assault on Bathsheba) and God’s relationship with them. To make a banner this size, I used 1/2 inch x 100 ft co ..read more
