Last week, Dr. Ho presented a few hours of continuing education on “Concussion Management for Optometrists” and “How to Better Serve Concussion Patients” to optometrists and the paraoptometric staff at Tennessee Association of Optometric Physician’s annual meeting in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This continuing education seminar provided clinical pearls of diagnosing and subtle clinical presentations of patients suffering with the ‘silent’ signs of a concussion. Dr. Ho previously presented on the topic at her local optometric meeting (see previous post).   Concussion Pointers Some take home poi ..read more

What is Syntonics Light Therapy
Ho Vision Group Blog
by jamie.ho@hovisiongroup.com

Syntonics light therapy involves applying a combination of specific frequencies of light to restore balance to an individual’s nervous system. Certain wavelengths can either stimulate or calm the sympathetic (fight / flight) or parasympathetic (rest) nervous system. When light stimulates the retina (the layer of neural tissue at the back of the eye), some information travels to the visual cortex for vision processing. Other light reaches our midbrain (our pineal gland and hypothalamus) which are centers for regulating sleep, metabolism, alertness, cognition, mood, and pain modulation.   W ..read more

Vision Therapy – More than the Eyes can see

Before I started this position, I never would have thought that there is “vision therapy” as well as eye exercises. There is more than what the eyes can see; vision involves both brain and body. Every part of the body must work as a team, just as an office team. Training exercises strengthens physically and mentally. Determination with hope gives more power in the mind to overcome obstacles. It takes both physical and mental strength to bypass one’s obstacles. It does not mean the obstacles disappear, but they can be used to strengthen another ability or one of the 5 senses. As I continue t ..read more

What are prism glasses? When we hear the word prism, most people probably think of the triangular reflective glass that disperses white light into a spectrum of color. In the optometric world, prism is used in a slightly different manner that has astounding effects on the patients that use it. Prism is an extraordinary tool that is utilized primarily for shifting our visual field into a more correct position that aligns with how viewed images actually appear. Prism glasses may be especially helpful for people who may suffer from double vision. Without the prism lens, patients may be viewing th ..read more

Vision is Motor

Vision is motor! When thinking about optometry, most think about general eye health. This is also how I thought prior to my experience working at Ho Vision Group.  My background in Biochemistry and Neuroscience taught me a lot about neurophysiology and structural visual pathways, but never demonstrated the importance of movement in relation to visual development. In the last few months I have quickly learned that motor and vision are intricately related. During pediatric interactions, I have learned the importance of being active, exploring one’s surroundings, and looking farther than an ..read more

What is Normal Vision?

Everyone with what we term as “normal vision”, associates vision in terms of how good we can see and read. 20/20 is what most people think is normal or good vision; however, vision is more than being able to read letters and words. Vision is how we perceive things in our surroundings and space, it helps balance us. Vision is how we focus and relax using the eyes; as well as, what and how much we can see, and how vivid the images we see are. Vision has its on system within the body, but it work with the ears, brain, and body to help guide you through the day. It can be responsible for a number ..read more
