How To Keep Learning Wing Chun And Not Get Stuck As a beginner in Wing Chun I was fascinated by the style. It seemed so effortless and light, unlike anything I had seen previously in my other martial arts experience. My mind was open and I sucked up all the information like a sponge. Luckily my sifu had a full time school and it ran several days a week. I also took private tuition too, which helped.  As I read about Wing Chun, I applied the principles in classes, working on a different things over time. One principle I read about is the Luk Sau Jik Kuen or lost hand, strike forwards. The ..read more

Wing Chun is one of the best martial arts for older adults and can be practiced into old age. Wing Chun Kung Fu is a concept based martial art which is considered to be one of the three great martial art styles of Southern China. It was founded during the Qing Dynasty by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, of the famed Shaolin Temple. Much of Wing Chun’s practice revolves around a sticky hands practice called Chi Sau. In chi sau, both proponents attempt to attack down the centreline towards their opponent. However, they must not give up their defence in doing so. Internal Wing Chun

Internal Wing Chun is something which has always intrigued me. In this video Chu Shong Tin talks about one of “the most difficult skills” to obtain within the Wing Chun system – “Nim Tao”. Nim Tao is the internal aspect of the system. It refers to the unconscious mind in the creation of power. Ip Man used to tell his students not to use strength in their form practice. Nim Tao is mind power and with regular practice a student can obtain Nim Tao if they practice for long enough and with the right mindset. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ‘”King of ..read more

Is Wing Chun Effective?

If you’re considering training in Wing Chun, you’ve probably wondering “is Wing Chun effective”? In the context of MMA or sporting competition, it is not as effective as some boxing or grappling arts. This is perhaps why Wing Chun is given such a bad rap by some. But that’s because there’s no safe way to practise against a non-compliant opponent. You would break the knees, gouge the eyes or crush the windpipe at the first opportunity, in an actual street situation where more is at stake. Doing anything less when the opportunity presents itself is not practical. Doing less would give your attac ..read more
