‘Local hero’ Alasdair Cassels has passed away following cancer battle
A Northern Ireland-born businessman who founded the Cassels Brewing Company has died after a private battle with cancer.
Alasdair Cassels, described as a man with “big ideas and drive”, was aged 71.
Born in NI, he relocated with his parents to England as a child before settling in New Zealand.
He went on to found Cassels Brewing, a family owned and operated craft beer brewery located in Woolston, Christchurch.

Cassels Milk Stout was first brewed on the brewpub’s wood fired kettle in 2011, initially as a cask-conditioned real ale. Brewery co-owned Zak Cassels says it was a hit from the start, but a decade on, its popularity has sky-rocketed. “it is by far our best selling beer, account for a a third of all the beer we make and sell. We now sell it in every format imaginable – casks, kegs, nitro kegs, cans and bottles.”

A relatively new release from Cassels, but clearly one that a lot of thought and brewing precision has gone into. Superb hop aroma on the nose with pine, grapefruit and nectarine all coming through loud and clear. The craft brewery took first place in the American Pale Ale section at the awards in London. Executive brewer Simon Bretherton says the beer is an explosion of pleasant flavours.

Christchurch brewery Cassels has come out on top again at the World Beer Awards – this time for its Cassels American Pale Ale.
The brew won the title of World’s Best Pale American-style Pale Ale in the overall Pale Beer category at the 2021 event.
It’s the third consecutive year of success for the family-owned brewery at the awards: Cassels won World’s Best Milk Stout in 2020, having won the same award in 2019 with the same beer, as well as Best Overall in the Stout & Porter category.
