Toward the end of last year I was not feeling the best, tired, not able to do the things I use too. I went to my GP and explaining that I wanted some blood test done and can they check for cancer - my Mum died of lung cancer. Before my Mum was diagnosed with lung cancer, I had seen a similar fatigue that I was now feeling. Unfortunately when I went to get my results, the pathology labs would not test for cancer.............. sad face! Fast forward to November where some of you know that I was involved in a car accident, I injured my neck and had bad concussion. I was taken to hospital where th ..read more

Making herbal teas for medicine is a way that you become involved in the healing process. Herbal teas may not be as potent as herbal tinctures they are full of other constituents from the herbs that encourage the healing processes. They are most effective for chronic, long term conditions and imbalances. They can be drunk hot, at room temperature or cool, depending on the condition that you are treating. So to make your herbal tea steep the dried herbs in boiled water and let sit cover to maximise the medicinal properties of the herbs. Teas can be made with a single herb or serval in combinat ..read more

This morning I managed to go for a bike ride. You may say "good on you" but this bike ride was significant to me as it was the first time since I had my bike accident in April this year. For those who do not know, I went around a corner of a narrow bike track met an oncoming bike which I had to swerve, which ended in a head on crash with a metal pole. I remember seeing it, the noise of the crash but nothing else. I do not remember hitting anything but with the injuries that I sustained, I hit the metal pole and railing. Ouch you say, ouch I said, remarkably I cycled to finish the ride and back ..read more

Peppermint - Mentha piperita Peppermint is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint, where they grew together in the wild. This little aromatic plant has been used for many years in Herbal Medicine because of its volatile oils which give its distinctive fragrance. It can be used in cooking to enhance the flavour of food, both sweet and savoury dishes. It can be infused in cool water to give a refreshing drink, but also as a refreshing facial spray on a hot summer's day. Peppermint infusions can be used to repel insects and household rodents. Mice and rats dislike the aroma of peppermint, it was st ..read more

Echinacea one of the amazing herbs in our herbal dispensary, yet there is a lot of confusion about the different types, not all work the same way. Alkylamides are considered to be the active and bioavailable compounds of Echinacea as well as the major markers of quality and activity. There are two main types of alkylamides found in Echinacea. The first type produces acute immune activity, however, are rapidly degraded in our liver and predominantly found in E. purpurea. The other type of alkylamides provide delayed onset with prolonged therapeutic, and protect the rapid degradation of the fir ..read more
