Hi all, I've posted on here a couple times as I was looking for a dog and we landed on this breed as the perfect addition to our family. We'll be picking up our puppy this weekend. I have a million questions, but my first is - what insurance do you all recommend for a puppy? My vet has a wellness program for $15/month that I was planning on getting (free exams, 10% off services and $5 nail trims). They recommend complementing that with Trupanion for "emergency" coverage. I just spoke... We're getting a puppy ..read more

Hello, we adopted a 7 week old golden a couple of weeks ago. Or so we were told she was 7 weeks old. The vet believes she may have been younger based on size and weight and the rescue cant confirm nor can the breeder she was saved from. She came to us incredibly small. Only 4.5 pounds for a 7 week old golden. This is why the vet thought she was younger. Anyway when adopted she was on Hills Science Diet puppy blend small bites chicken and rice formula. We didnt like that brand so we wanted... 7 week old golden retriever digestion issues. Hills brand food ..read more

Last week I traveled to Canada and brought home Icy! Her registered name is Rundlemtn's Northern Attitude, which was inspired by the Noah Kahan song "Northern Attitude". I feel like this is truly a GRF puppy - Icy out of Rio x Summit. I own Rio and have been a member of this forum for years, and Summit is owned by @Rundlemtn. The entire pregnancy journey was documented in this thread... Introducing Icy ..read more

Hi All, The trainer we are working with for our 4 month old Golden is recommending using a prong collar. My concern is how long it is okay to wear the collar. Most of the comments I have found, seem to indicate that it should only be worn during active training, while some trainers say it should be worn all day in the beginning to correct certain behaviors. How long is it okay to keep the prong collar on ..read more

Just wondering if we are alone in this--our guy had been eating Simply Nourish Large Breed Puppy food for several months and when we opened the last new bag he developed terrible diarrhea 3 days later. Took the bag back and got a new one. Fed him boiled chicken and rice until he recovered. Transitioned him to the new bag and here we are 3 days later with the terrible diarrhea again. Just took it back and am changing to Blue Large Breed Puppy food. Anyone else having issues lately with... Simply Nourish Large Breed Puppy food--issues ..read more

Bashing breeders/ Bad buyer

There seems to be alot of breeder bashing on this site. Let's turn the table and talk about what they aren't telling you. Breeders have a life..a very busy life..Most work outside jobs. We're not here to be at your beck and call 24hrs a day. Weekends and holidays. We're not here for you to call or text at 11pm We're not here to wait on you until 6 pm on puppy pick up day. We have other things to do besides wait on you. That may be that person's only day off...they spent it waiting on you. I... Bashing breeders/ Bad buyer ..read more

Our little guy Augie is about 30-32hr removed from his neutering procedure. Last night he was pretty zonked and out of it. This morning, he seemed to be back to his normal self. Curious about thoughts on the following activity level items: I am WFH so he routinely gets 3-4mi thru the day on walks. Vet said short walks are fine. Doing 2-3 half-mile walks at a slow pace and he seems to be fine. We live on a 2nd floor condo that has about 15 stairs up/down. Carried him the first... Neutering Activity Questions ..read more

Safe cooling mats?

Hello all, Second question for the day. My 15-week-old female golden puppy seems to be sensitive to heat, and we live in an area of Northern California that will only get hotter as summer peaks. We bought her a two-sided dog bed / mat, but even the "summer season" side was too warm for her this spring. I've researched cooling mats on Amazon, but they are either filled with water or with gel. With a teething puppy, especially overnight, I'm concerned about her breaking through and... Safe cooling mats ..read more

What's the right command/reward sequence to redirect sneaky chewing?

Hello all, I need some training advice to redirect improper chewing. My 15-week-old female puppy is slowly spending more time in the crate voluntarily, but she likes to chew on the crate bars at the entrance, even when the door is open, we're sitting there, she's surrounded by chew toys and bones (plenty of other options), and our trainer has confirmed it's not anxiety or boredom, but more because of her teething. The frustrating thing is she will bring her favorite bone right up to that... What's the right command/reward sequence to redirect sneaky chewing ..read more
