Is this safe?

Looking to purchase a coverted schoolbus. Trying to assess if this stove setup is safe or if I would need to redo the install. I would need to to be functional through consistent use through Upstate NY winters. The owner says that a little rain comes in the stove sometimes during a heavy storm. The glass directly behind the stove has broken due to heat, so either a heat resistant panel needs to go there or stove moved. From what I am reading the metal flashing behind the stove needs a 1''... Read more ..read more

Hey guys, complete noob here so bare with me. I live in CT and have a 4500 sq ft home and am trying to use the oil furnace less for heat. So I just had a Lopi Large Hybrid insert installed into my mason fireplace. I have a few questions for you seasoned folks: 1. I run the cat up to about 1200 F and use kiln-dried wood so I try not to load too much so I don't run too hot, risking overfire...again I am noob so dont want to destroy it or have a chimney fire. Is that a good temp to peak... Read more ..read more

Oil tank filter cartridge replacement interval

I have a 275 gallon oil tank with a cartridge style canister/filter bolted to the bottom/side of the tank. It feeds an oil fired hot water furnace (the hot air furnace does not get used). I use about 150 gallons of oil per year for the hot water. Does the filter have to be replaced based on time even if I dont use much oil? The water heater burner nozzle and oil tank filter were replaced about 22 months ago but the nozzle just clogged last week and needed a service call. They replaced the... Read more ..read more

Appalachian Fireplace Insert 4N1XL

I would like to install an Appalachian 4N1XL in my wood burning fireplace. The pipe opening on the insert is 8" diameter. The current opening in the damper area is around 6". Sure, prefer not to modify damper area for an 8" pipe. I was thinking of using a 8 to 6" reducer at the insert and then connect a 6" pipe to it and then the liner. Anybody used a 6" liner with the Appalachian 4N1XL? Any draft issues? Thanks ..read more

Hello everyone! I am new here, so please forgive me if I am inadvertently making any forum faux pas. My husband and I are building a custom timber-framed home in our farm in New Hampshire. We're hoping to build an efficient home, and are planning to go with heat pumps, triple pane windows, ERV/HRV, insulated concrete, etc. We love cooking and we love cabin vibes. We really want to have a wood cookstove in our kitchen. We are 99% decided on the Homewood Heritage. We also want to have... Read more ..read more

WHAT IS MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO HEAT HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM
The Hearth Room Forums

Hi, I am building my 1800 sqft studio on 4" slab and plan to use hydronic radiant heat system installed in slab. What is the best way to heat the water. I'd prefer not to use electric and found some fantastic hi efficiency wood boilers (92% MBTEK PEllet DUO is my favorite so far) however after doing many calculations, factoring in time, maintenace etc I am wondering at the true cost. Does anyone have any experience with this and going down this road? wood or electric best for this system... Read more ..read more
