Pun intended, of course. Finals night was full of fiery energy. Division I went to threes sets with Joseph Cliff defeating Sebastian Sanchez (4-6/6-0/6-1). It’s always tough when best friends play each other. Sebastian’s backhand gave him an edge in the first set, but couldn’t keep up the intensity as the match wore on. “I felt like I played my best tennis in the first set but I couldn’t maintain that level and became tired.” Cliff went on to hold his service games and tried a different approach. “I started to hit to his forehand more and I made less errors.” There was another three setter ove ..read more

For most, it was their first competitive environment. Regardless of the result, all the entrants played lots of matches and got better and more fired up with each round! Since it was the first time for many to compete, we split everyone into two categories – orange and yellow ball. In the first stage, the Orange Ball group played in a 15-minute round robin format within their age group. Following on from the first stage, each group had a fir ..read more

On a cold and windy Wednesday afternoon in late May, Shabbir Affridi and Nirupan Yoganathan (both Strathfield Sports Club tennis members) rallied it out on court 5 for the 2021 Round Robin Men’s Single title. The final score was as tough as it looked, 2-6, 7-6(7-4), 6-3 in Affridi’s favour.  Affridi, a Division 1-1 Badge player was down a break in the first set and it was 30-40 on his serve to Yoganathan, a younger and fitter player. Affridi’s legs weren’t moving and he started to feel the pressure. Being an all-court player, Affridi chose to stay back at the baseline to counter Yoganatha ..read more
