gailcarriger: sindri42: So I looked this up and the whole story is wild. Basically, market research for japanese bakeries determined that a) they sell more breads and pastries the more different varieties they have, and b) japanese bakery customers prefer items which are not wrapped, because individually wrapped things give the impression of being like, preserved or something instead of fresh and good I guess? So the obvious solution is to sell as many different kinds of unwrapped breads and pastries as you can. But! In actual practice, that’s a nightmare. No packaging means no barcodes to ..read more

prince-atom: retrowar: longislandairpower: Quite a maneuver @petermorwood you’ve probably been tagged in this one a lot. I don’t think so, or at least can’t remember it, though I do remember, about 10 years ago, getting a bit vexed by another diagram - “How To Attack Enemy Aircraft” - which was more like “How To Get Shot Down Really Fast”. What gets me about this toss-bomb business is the way it involves flying right over the target before releasing the ordnance. Didn’t anyone think that someone might object, and fire off a lot of explosive stuff to prove it? Like a lot of diagrams I’ve ..read more

Hi Peter! You mentioned that you’d like to get your hands on some Hungarian paprika. Not sure how much of an ordeal that is in Ireland (there seems to be a decent Hungarian specialty store in Dublin?) but if you are willing to pay for shipping (flat 23€ for up to 9.9kg), I’ve found at least Hungarian store that ships abroad. You can head to rubinpaprika_com and click the tiny Brit flag in the top left corner for the English site :)

Thanks for the heads-up! That's a pretty fair shipping price - it's €22 from Bien Manger in France for a similar up-to-10 kg weight. There is indeed a Hungarian store in Dublin, but they don't ship even in-country so shopping there means a physical visit which we haven't managed yet. We also found real Hungarian paprika at the Austrian Supermarket (where we bought the canned and ready-meal Paprika Hendl), but getting it from actual Hungary seems an even better idea. And then there are those oils, which I've never seen anywhere else... Besides, I'm familiar with Szeged paprika, the Hot version ..read more
