Science and Culture: Integrating Indica-Sativa Terminology at East Fork
East Fork Cultivars Blog
by East Fork Team

At East Fork, we’ve always been big proponents of evidence-based practices and also had an affinity for the deep, generational culture of cannabis cultivation. In communicating about our farm and our products, we’ve consistently opted to use language that is the most accurate and precise: accepted (and not misused) scientific terminology. We’ve chosen to say cannabis and not marijuana, cultivar or variety over strain, and to discuss genotypes, phenotypes, and chemotypes rather than Indicas, Sativas, and Hybrids. We’ve resisted using the vernacular or “folk taxonomy” of Indica, Sativa ..read more

All About Cannabinoids
East Fork Cultivars Blog

Scientific definitions of cannabinoids can be surprisingly circular. An example definition is that cannabinoids are a class of biological compounds that bind to cannabinoid receptors.  But what are cannabinoid receptors? Receptors that respond to cannabinoids! This begging of the question stems from the history of cannabis science.  Chemical analysis of cannabis led to identification of certain characteristic compounds, which were named “cannabinoids” in reference to their source plant.  Then, researchers explored how these compounds work in the body, which led to the discovery ..read more

How We Dry Hemp Flower in a Kiln
East Fork Cultivars Blog
by East Fork Team
1y ago
Each season, East Fork Cultivars grows around nine acres of USDA Organic Certified hemp. Our hemp is carefully bred and cultivated for its resinous flower buds, the part of the plant that produces exciting compounds like CBD, CBG, aromatic compounds, and much more. Drying hemp flowers that preserve therapeutic compounds takes a lot of planning, care, and refined infrastructure, particularly at scale. The hemp season begins when we germinate seed in May, and concludes when our plants mature in October. When plants reach maturity, we first hand-harvest the largest flower-bearing branche ..read more

After an exciting two years, East Fork Cultivars has made the difficult decision to close Hemp Bar. In 2020, we joined a group of friends to purchase an historic, rundown building in Portland’s up-and-coming Foster-Powell neighborhood. Despite the uncertainty posed by COVID and a societal inflection point on race and policing, we forged ahead with a vision of “bringing our farm to Portland.” We worked throughout 2020 rehabbing the old building, welcoming a group of muralists to paint the exterior while we busily worked inside to resurrect the shabby gem. In May of 2021 we opened H ..read more

A Brief Trip Through Cannabis Classification
East Fork Cultivars Blog
by Anna Symonds

There are many different ways to describe cannabis varieties – some scientific, some historical, and some colorfully imaginative.  Some descriptive terms are more fact-based than others or are used erroneously.  But confusingly, even language that is scientifically accurate is not necessarily relevant or helpful to someone who wants to predict the effects of consuming a particular plant. The Indica-Sativa-Hybrid Mess For example, the popular indica-sativa-hybrid terminology that is often used in cannabis product marketing is based upon cannabis taxonomy: the botanical classif ..read more
