If this post reads a little different, there's a sure reason as to why! My name is Samantha (legharpy), and I run a blog called "Do You Feel At Home?" dedicated to archiving and rambling on and on about emo from the 90s to the ever-so-strange aughts. I'm ecstatic to have been invited as a coauthor here on CanadianWasteland to share my deranged blabbering every once in a while, and all for a blog I sincerely care about! Ben, Maya, and Tenzin's blood, sweat, and hours spent scanning and routinely preserving music for their amassing public archive has been a remarkable influe ..read more

Humble Ary was a hardcore band from Denver, Colorado who were active from 2001-2005 and then briefly again in 2012. One member was also in the hardcore/screamo band Green Fuse and experimental hardcore band, The Kindercide. The band released three 7"s (one also released as a 6"), a split 7" with Bailer, and a three-way split 7" with No Cash Value and The Gromos.      Like their contemporaries and tour mates The Pine, Humble Ary was a back to basics emo hardcore band that reflected the sounds of the burgenoning 90s "emo" scene while incorporating elements ..read more

From Maggy To Margaret - Demo (1997)

From Maggy To Margaret was an emocore band from Lantzville, B.C. I first found out about this band through their contribution to the 8:11 On A Summer Night cassette compilation, which features a ton of other excellent B.C. hardcore bands. This band is a real hidden gem, I could easily compare them instrumentally to other B.C. greats like Breakwater and Wrought: Iornsmile; but the vocals are a lot more earnest and melodic, at times reminding me of the vocal delivery on Bob Tilton's earlier work. Every song on this tape is about 7 minutes long; it is really refreshing to ..read more

Tiger 100 - Discography (1993-1995)

Tiger 100 was a short-lived punk band from Ann Arbor, Michigan which included a member of Death Cab For Cutie. They only ever released one 7" as well as a demo tape, but they have quite an extensive amount of unreleased work including some live recordings.      Tiger 100's music was very noise-rock driven with elements of post-rock and a distinctly DIY punk touch. Their actual 7" leans more into the indie/punk sound while their demo and unreleased work is super noisy and distorted. Their guitar work almost reminds me of Slint at times but with more noisy ..read more

Examination Of The... was a hardcore band from Sioux Falls, South Dakota who were active in the early 2000s. The band included members of The Spirit Of Versailles and In Loving Memory. They released two full-length albums, a demo and two EPs (One split with In Loving Memory) before they split up sometime in 2003.      Their early work was reminiscent of bands like In Loving Memory or The Spirit Of Versailles with a slightly metallic touch to its instrumentals along with fast-paced shrieks. Their later work drew more inspiration from sludge ..read more

Bob Tilton was a hardcore and later, post-rock band from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, UK. The band were pioneers of the UK emo/hardcore scene and staples on the legendary Subjugation label. Starting off as a ferocious and driving hardcore band on their first 7", Bob Tilton slowly incorporated Moss Icon esque-spoken word, shimmering guitars and post rock sensibilities into their music as the years passed.      Remarkably the band was featured on John Peel's BBC 1 radio show, which is unprecedented for a D.I.Y punk band. Apparently John Peel was a big f ..read more

    S. Process was a post-hardcore and later, an electronic post-punk band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I first stumbled onto the S. Process 12" when I was taking a deep dive through Track Star Records catalog; immediately, I connected with it and had to find a copy. After this 12" however the band took on a more commercialized electronic sound that doesn't resonate with me nearly as much so I decided to just cover the 12" for this post.      S. Process continues in the same vein as other Pennsylvania bands like I Am Heaven and Jazz Man's Needle; with slow, spide ..read more

Plunger was a hardcore band from Crofton, Maryland who were active sometime between 1993 and 1997. During their time together the band released a demo tape, 12", 7", two split 7"s (with William Martyr 17 and Blank), and finally a post-humous discography 3xCD boxset on Vermin Scum Records in 2017. According to vocalist and songwriter Tom LoMacchio; some of the band's biggest influences included Moss Icon, Lungfish and the Hated. This can be clearly heard in Plunger's sound, they were evidently influenced by their Maryland contemporaries but they expanded on that sound and fr ..read more

Death Of Marat was a 3 piece post-punk band from Phoenix, Arizona. Somewhere at the intersection of Unwound, Clikitat Ikatowi, and Killing Joke lies Death Of Marat. The band was playful, experimental and intense in their songwriting and tight knit, technical nature. Starting off under the name "Mars Observer Mission" Death Of Marat made leaps and bounds in their songwriting and creativity with every release, culminating in their 2002 CD release "All Eyes Open".      Death Of Marat combines elements of hardcore, math-rock, post-punk, goth rock and space rock t ..read more

LigOD - Discography (1994-1997/2005)

LigOD was an emocore band from Kent, Ohio. Coming from the same scene that birthed a slew of excellent bands like Harriet The Spy, Grain and Armstrongs Secret Nine; LigOD was a creative powerhouse that unfortunately flew under the radar for nearly 30 years. I'm proud to say that after 2 years of me sending (most likely) annoying messages to a friend of the band I have finally got my hands on most of their material, clocking in at a whopping 3 hours and 30 minutes.      Previously, there was only a sped up crackly vinyl rip of their sole 7" available online ..read more
