2019 Cherry season closed

And that’s it – our most unpredictable cherry season is closed … we’ve no cherries left to pick.  Thank-you to all who visited our orchard or met our cherry express. The cherries really were the boss this season… driven by some extreme swings in weather conditions.  With a small crop caused by some crazy weather and drought we saved all our cherries for our farm direct sales and pick your own … even then they were so popular we ran out earlier than expected.   A bonus of no rain was good quality. Our trees are looking healthy, ready for some kinder weather. We’ll see you ag ..read more

SWEET CHERRIES At this stage it looks likely we will open for 2-3 days mid-December only for pick your own. APRICOTS will be available when picked. MORELLO SOUR CHERRIES expected mid to late December. The CHERRY EXPRESS will have its wings severely clipped if it flies at all this year. We are unlikely to bring in a picking crew due to a small fruit load. Our early sweet cherry varieties (Rons, Sambas) have almost no crop (other than a few trees on the edge near the beehives) and the Simones have a patchy crop – some areas of the orchard on higher ground have a full crop whilst most have a very ..read more

Book now to take a stroll through the blooms and pick yourself a bunch of colour to take home. One afternoon only Saturday 16 January from 1pm. Please book a timeslot to visit so we can avoid queues and keep it covid safe. This is not a whole field of sunflowers but a mixed species strip planted to encourage and feed pollinator insects. During cherry picking we had lots of visitors ask if they could come back to see the flowers bloom and now’s the time! We’ll also h ..read more

There’s no fruit to pick right now. Our trees stand graceful with a sculptural beauty in their leafless winter dormancy.  Pruned and fed they are saving resources and soaking in the winter chill as they get ready to burst into blossom in spring for fruit in summer.  Our cherry harvest is short and sharp late November and early December.  Jot it in your diaries, come visit us early December! With pruning behind us we’re still busy on the farm, working to prepare new plantings and to have our systems and paperwork ready for our food safety and export certifications.   The pos ..read more

My little cover crop is coming up beautifully. We cultivated and planted every second row through the orchard, trying to remove and outcompete the weedy, clumpy paspalum grass and bring some life and organic matter back into the soils. The barley has sprinted away first – its big seed helping it to get a good start. Clover is just starting to germinate. In other rows I’m trying grazing wheat plus clover and rye-corn plus clover. I’m hoping to be able to get two cuts of mulch to go under the tree line – curious to see which of the cereals handles that best. Dandelions and clover are coming back ..read more

KIRSEBÆR SOVS Danish cherry sauce

A few people have asked me for this recipe.  Any Dane knows it well as the traditional Danish Christmas dessert is this cherry sauce served over a rice and almond and cream pudding (risalamande).  There’s one whole almond in the pudding and whoever is lucky enough to find that wins .. traditionally the prize is a marzipan pig! It’s perhaps the most important cherry recipe for my family as it’s been an important part of our Christmas as long as I can remember. As my siblings and I each married and started our own families this is a tradition that has stayed for our family Christmas ..read more
