How to manage change better…Good morning.

Good morning. Here I am, again, stuck on my computer, looking at the screen. As you are possibly now, reading this. We’re waiting for the kitchen person to come and measure up for a new kitchen – my partner is buzzing about it, but I am a bit ‘meh’. Hence I am hiding away writing this haha, whilst I think about how to manage change better.  Change is a necessary evil for us all, whether that be relationship breakdown, new jobs, or even deaths of those we love. It’s always helpful to think about how to manage change better. I am moving to a more mobile way of working. Whilst I love where I ..read more

Relationships constitute the essence of human existence, weaving a tapestry of connections that shape our emotional, mental, and physical well-being. From the cradle to the grave, humans are inherently social beings, seeking, nurturing, and thriving within intricate networks of connections. The profound significance of relationships in human life pervades every aspect of our lives, influencing our growth, happiness, and overall health. Evolutionary Foundations of Relationships The evolutionary trajectory of humans underscores the centrality of relationships. Our ancestors survived and thrived ..read more

Goodbye Haworth

In this article I explore my relationship with Haworth, and think about the connection between Place and Heart. This has come after the realisation that, due to relocating to Somerset, U.K., the places that I visited to connect with nature, to reflect, and to distance myself from the world, for many years, will no longer be easy to travel to. In fact, it is unlikely I will be visiting them again for some time. I hadn’t realised exactly how much I will miss the space. This has led to me realising how important the connection between Heart and Place is. As the Brontes wrote so feverishly of thei ..read more

Welcome Back
Dr. Andrew Smith Psychotherapist Blog
by Andrew Smith
4M ago
Well, the past few months have flown, but I haven’t been sat twiddling my thumbs. In fact, I have been as busy as always. I have been settling in to work in the NHS, recording an album, and focusing a little more on my art. And I have been celebrating the successes – I have had art exhibited (there is one currently on display in a gallery in Glastonbury), and I have had requests to perform all over the country. Whilst I’m not rushing to develop a performing career, I am enjoying the newness of it, and it is good to offer myself a welcome back to writing. I guess at times I find myself occasion ..read more

Do Auras really exist?
Dr. Andrew Smith Psychotherapist Blog

Welcome to today’s exciting offer, where I ask the question, do auras really exist? I am asking the question from the wondrous landscape of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, where I am spending some vacation time with loved ones. The idea to research this subject came from reading more of Joe Dispenza’s ‘Becoming Supernatural’. Whilst he doesn’t go in to the subject much, and tends to just operate from the position that Auras are factually and scientifically present, I prefer a more discerning approach. I think the notion of auras often conjure up magical ideas and images (‘woo-woo’), and hea ..read more

Does a spiritual life need to be isolated?

I just watched a video by an organisation I have much respect for, Ascension. Ascension has a comprehensive bible reading course led by Fr. Mike Schmitz, and they offer many free resources to help people on their spiritual journey, albeit from a Roman Catholic perspective. On the surface, the video has much relevance to contemporary lifestyles – if we find ourselves alone, we shouldn’t consider ourselves inadequate, or stop the search for meaning in life. And how wonderful it is to have young adults speaking about spirituality. However, the speaker is advocating for and normalising isolation ..read more

Three ways to protect yourself from narcissistic spirituality
Dr. Andrew Smith Psychotherapist Blog

In this article I want to offer five ways to protect yourself from narcissistic spirituality. We’ve all seen it. We go to a meditation group, a workshop, or a spirituality event, and the narcissists are there. Men with top-knots and perma-tans (and a few Om tattoos), women with long dreadlocks and bangles, the occasional cloak, flowers in hair, and everyone reeking of patchouli. We think they’re our friend, then realise latterly we were just a pawn in their megalomaniac quest for adoration. I know, this is a puerile generalisation, but one which, I imagine, most of us recognise at some level ..read more

Is Five Rhythms helpful; a review
Dr. Andrew Smith Psychotherapist Blog

I have been attending a FiveRhythms class lately in my new home town. I began attending purely because I like to dance, and I need to keep in shape given I spend so much time sitting. However, my journey with dance opened up far more in the process, and I want to write about some of the profound benefits we can get from practicing FiveRhythms. I am especially interested in the research on this practice, naturally, and hope to find out a little more about how people make sense of therapeutic dance. There isn’t a great deal of research out there, although the research that is there, concludes th ..read more

Three ways of meditating on the crucifixion

Welcome to this most special day of spirituality and religion. I wanted to write something specifically about the crucifixion, not to preach about Christianity, but to help you reflect on the notion of crucifixion for your own transformation. The image of Christ on the cross pervades all parts of Western life, and I think an invaluable concept to reflect upon. I hope you find the article to be of help. What is Good Friday?  As most of you are aware, Good Friday is one of the most important dates in Christian calendars. This is the day when Jesus Christ, the son of God, was crucified. Betr ..read more

Five ways to get the most out of therapy
Dr. Andrew Smith Psychotherapist Blog
by Andrew Smith

It occurred to me recently that many people know that they need therapy, but don’t really know how to be a client. Therapy can feel weird, unusual, or just bewildering. And you wouldn’t be blamed for wondering how therapy is going to work for you. This might be more pronounced if you don’t particularly like your therapist. This can worsen the symptoms we already have. Certainly, navigating the terrain is difficult, and it takes time to settle in to the therapeutic process. Thus, in this article I want to explore a little about how to get the most out of therapy as a client. One – boundaries At ..read more
