I'm continuing to ride my fat bike in the good weather months, what front/rear pressures have you guys found to work well with a mixture of trail and street riding. I ride the bike to a single track type trail a few miles away. The bike does not have a front suspension and 4.9" tires, Thanks ..read more

Finally got around to it! Old: Chao Yang 26x4.9 New: Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26x4.8 Mounted on 70mm single wall rims First off, they are almost EXACTLY the same size (when nominally inflated), so the 4.9 on the Chao is a big load of bull [censored] The Schwalbe's were also 1 lb lighter (each!), almost exactly. Which was a bit of a surprise, and a nice bonus. I've now accidently shed 4 lb from this bike by accident sooo.... cool? Installation wasn't that bad. Older Schwalbe Marathons have a reputation for being a challenge to install but the Jims weren't. The beads were seated by pumping to 20 PS ..read more

'Squishing' Noise at Low Pressures

My tires have developed an annoying 'squishing' noise when riding. At first, I thought there was tar or some other sticky substance on part of the tire tread (I was riding on pavement). That's not the case. The tires are clean and the same noise occurs on the trail, regardless of surface. If I inflate the tires to 15-20 PSI, the noise disappears completely. Below about 15 PSI, it comes back. I'm guessing there is some movement between the tire and tubes causing the noise??? Is this noise common at low pressure ..read more

So my fat bike experiment on the sandy fire roads in the wildlife refuge was sort of a bust (see Fat Bikes and Sand thread). 1 mile of pavement and another mile of gravel to get there - these bikes suck for that kind of riding (not exactly a surprise). Once in the refuge, riding the sand was OK but not something that compelled me to come back every week. And then there were the thorns/goat heads covering the tires  The pedal spacing bothered me and I couldn't get all that rotating mass out of my head. Maybe I should just sell the bike and move on :foo: But I don't give up that easy. Took ..read more

So I was in my LBS on Saturday, looking for a new pair of road shoes. They didn't have my size and color in stock, and instead I bought.... ...a 2022 Salsa Beargrease (11 Deore model) on closeout. It wasn't exactly an impulse buy - I've been thinking about shaking up my winter riding routine for some time. But BEFORE the snow falls, should I get different tires? The Beargrease comes with 45North Vanhelgas - good for snow and very knobby. I expect that in October/November I'll be riding it on fairly easy trails, paved roads (I have to get to the trails), with some single track and some riv ..read more

I'm looking for summer tire suggestions. I've currently got Surly Nates, but they have big lugs that I don't need for summer riding Ideally they would be something like Maxxis DTH tires. I like to ride to trails, so something that isn't too loud on pavement, but can still get traction on dirt forest trails ..read more
