The only book on Tai Chi you'll ever need

Is there a book that covers everything I need to know about Tai Chi? No. Thanks for reading and see you soon... In reality, that isn't how works. Anything that is a broad topic cannot be covered in one book. One of the funniest I've seen is the History of China in the form of a regular paperback. Why? Because you can't fit the history of an ancient culture on 350 pages. Tai Chi is a broad topic and it wouldn't be possible to cover everything in a few hundred pages. You're probably thinking about books which has in the title the words Ultimate or Complete, are definitely not that. They wo ..read more

How many hours of Tai Chi have you done?

Whilst chatting to students in the park. We stumbled on the topic of quality over time. So how many hours of Tai Chi have you done? I'm not one for counting, but after a quick estimate, I've probably done well over 6600 hours of Tai Chi and Qigong practice, in over 16 years. To me, it should be about the quality and the not the quantity that matters. Some days are better than others and that is just how life is. I definitely don't expect my students to put in more hours than is sensible and nor do I want them to. So what is it you wish to get out of Tai Chi? So where did this thing about the ..read more

Tai Chi & Qigong in harmony with what you do

The Tai Chi journey is different for everybody. We took up Tai Chi and Qigong for difficult reaaons. After practicing for a while, we should reflect on what we've learned and whether we feel different. Wherher our Tai Chi looks good to yourself or is satisfactory is another matter. The other day, I had an interesting conversation with one of my students over progress. He said that he now plays piano like he is practicing Tai Chi and Qigong. But then he practices Tai Chi and Qigong like playing the piano. So all activities are now linked in harmony. This isn't as simple as it sounds and this s ..read more

Finally jetting off

Last month, I finally went on a plane and went on a holiday abroad. It was a long time in the planning. Sure, I had ideas and plans. However, due to the global pandemic, options were limited. Even if you can travel, you may have to go through a lengthy quarantine period. And then there are the strikes. Considering how many places had pandemic measures in place, it wouldn't have been much fun. So I settled for staycations and I made the most of my leisure time. I know some people had issues with staycations. But where did your grandparents go before flying became accessible? I think we have to ..read more

Is loss such a bad thing?
White Horse Tai Chi Blog

The last 4 years have taught us a lot. We went from normal to the unexpected and. Nobody really expected things to be this tough. We all experienced loss in some way. But is loss such a bad thing? A matter of perception I have definitely learned a lot over the past 4 years. Yes it was tough, but Daoism teaches us the the world is always moving. Nothing stays the same and only a fool would think that the world stays still. Dealing with the loss of anything is a reality we must all deal with. If something was yours, it will be. If not, it was never meant to be. You win some and you lose some ..read more

Being honest about progress

Students often ask me about their progress. This isn't a problem for me, as I often give feedback and advice on how to do things better. As the teacher, I can only do so much. As the cliché goes, the teacher opens the door, but you will have to walk through it. That is, I can show you how to do it, but you have to do the rest. I can teach you every trick in the book and yet you will not get it. I can simplify it and yet it will not make a difference. Why is this? Is it because you aren't ready or because you aren't paying attention. Do you struggle in class? Everybody struggles, but many find ..read more

Blind faith

The world of martial arts is really not any different from any part of society. There are those who seek the journey and there are those who are eager to take advantage of those who do. One might think that it is the weak minded and the uninformed who fall into the trap. However, in reality, educated people also successfully targeted. If you're searching for something, you can be sure that there are those who will have something to offer you. Martial arts and spirituality have this in common, and if there is money to be made and people who influence, you can be sure that there is a guru wait ..read more

Swordsman myths and fantasies

What did you want to be when you were a child? A lot of children in Britain grew up wanting to drive steam trains. They are fantastic pieces of engineering aren't they? The combination of fire, steam and iron fires up the imagination for many. Also from the furnace are swords. Many children also grew up wanting to be a swordsman. Think of the Three Musketeers or William Wallace. However, being swordsman from the East are also a subject of many fantasies. In my culture, many grew up fantasising about being a swordsman. Plenty of people fancied themselves as Bruce Lee, but wielding a sword hol ..read more
