Hunting Chamois, the next best plan! Chamois have always been on our lease, Mt Maude, and the property Mt Burke Station, that our lease is part of. Maude and its catchment area cover several thousand acres, Mt Burke Station 28,000 acres. I estimate that we have 10,000 acres we can hunt chamois on, of this we currently utilizing just 3500 acres. We are going to use all of those 10,000 acres in 2024.Several reasons for this, primary amongst them is to take the pressure we are putting on the 3500 and spread it over the 10,000. We are at risk of over harvesting the accessible country we can day ..read more

Hunting season 2023: back in business  Who can’t recall 25th of March 2020? As a hunting guide it’s etched into my memory, and here we are 25th March 2023. Three years later and three weeks into our 2023 hunting season with grins on our faces, and let’s be honest, finally some money in our bank account. Importantly all these current hunts are postponements from 2020, many of them booked in 2019. The feeling of closure, coupled with the sharing of the complexities of the three to four year wait, are something only those of us involved directly can fully appreciate. What a journey, tha ..read more

Everyone has their stories of Covid and the pandemic, many of these stories are still happening and will continue to influence and affect us for some time. For us as a business and the wider hunting community the timing (March 2020) could not have occurred at a worse time, we were three weeks into our season, the Red Stag rut was in full swing, we had a book full of hunters, everything was set for a ..read more

There are 2 labs playing on the deck, a tabby cat stretched out in front of the fire box, snow falling above 1000m(3200ft) and craggy rain all around us. Sues off to the airport for work, no matter it’s Sunday, it’s on the roster and she is the boss, it’s not a flying day but there is always a small mountain of paper work to keep the business she CEOs for running smoothly. I’ve got an ample pile of dry firewood under the eaves on the deck and my normal clutter scattered of paper over the kitchen table..who needs an office. 2019 hunting season is behind us, the stags up on the lease will be g ..read more

What to expect when you bow hunt It’s the little things that make a big difference with bow hunting, having to many of the little things can lead to opportunities lost. With 25 years of bowhunting and over 30 as a hunting guide I’d call myself experienced, I may even go as far as saying I’m good at what I do, what I’m not is an expert.Nor can I read the hunters mind. That stag, Fallow buck or Tahr I can predict with a fare amount of certainty. The big question mark is always the hunter. I’m going to attempt to explain as gently as I can what your guide is hoping you can do once we have the win ..read more

Happy New Year!

I Thought I would use the seasons as my starting point for this quick catch up. It’s our summer right now, mix that in with Christmas and New Year and you will find most of New Zealand at the beach or the lakes with boats, kids, family and pets. Work is for most, on hold for 2-3 weeks, not so for a fishing guide and a flight instructor. Sue has the busiest time of her year right now. Good weather, plenty of people and long days make for lots of logged flying hours and all the pleasures and pressures of work. The fly fishing is in high demand, but I have a seasonal dilemma to deal with, my favo ..read more
