Vice (Versatile Commodore Emulator)

Hi, Has anyone had any luck running VICE, specifically the C64 emulator, on FreeBSD? I see it is in ports but not packages (it's marked as broken). And I understand we shouldn't mix packages and ports. So I'm basically wondering if anyone has successfully built the vanilla sources distributed by the VICE project themselves? There is a C64 cartridge whose code I want to reverse-engineer for a hobby project of mine, and I was hoping to have a Commodore emulator on FreeBSD so I don't need to involve Linux. I've nothing against Linux - this is just a convenience thing because I have so much of the ..read more

What is a good alterative to VMWARE?

What is a good alterative to VMWARE? I need something to be used for webhosting to create a VPS. I have a website that is coded in php8.2 and need something that has a free version that can be easily upgraded over time to a paid version like a pro version. It needs to have some API that I can use with php or could use with my website. Also what do people use to automate the installation of an OS and the software's like apache that includes it's configurations to use the clients domain name etc. I need to have a way where you just place an order click and pay and then instantly install the OS ..read more

Thin jail trying to mount their nullfs only if already mounted, resulting in failure to start.

I have made a new jail config, using separate fstab files like in the new handbook version. Now the strange thing is, that if I service jail start <myjail>, it fails because it apparently does not mount the nullfs filesystems in the file defined by the jail config entry mount.fstab = "/jails/containers/${name}.fstab";. But if I manually mount these nullfs by mount -aF myjail.fstab and then try to start the jail, it fails as well, complaining that the mount command failed because already mounted. Any idea what could cause that strange behavior? What could I have done wrong? Edit: More ..read more

Automate spinning up a bunch of thin jails

I'm setting up the *ARR suite apps in jails (using the Bastille manager). I used to do this in debian and docker but this time I moved to freeBSD to try out it's native zfs support. In setting up I need to setup a uniform user, setup external mounts (the involved bit) and install the apps on each jail. I did this manually on a trial system and it works perfectly (finally!). In docker this was all automated in the form of compose scripts. I write it up once and then don't need to worry about it when I reinstall/upgrade the host.. Is there any automation tool I can use in my case ..read more

How to set up storage for a bhyve hypervisor? ZFS or UFS for host? Guest?

Hello, I am considering migrating a few VMs to a new hosts and would love to make it a freebsd one. I am not sure however of the best way to set up storage. From the Handbook I read that using ZFS on the host and ZFS volumes for the guests would be optimal. But a blog post from vermaden tells me simple files offer better performance. ZFS for the host seems to be the easiest way to set up RAID. But to be honest I have trouble understanding what actually happens if I used ZFS on both sides. Which machine does what? Does the guest benefit from the RAID offered by ZFS on the host over its drive ..read more

Print from jail using CUPS on host

Dear community, I run the release version of FreeBSD-14.0 on a host. On the host CUPS is up and running. Using libreoffice on the host I can print documents on a separate network printer. Now two questions come up. 1. CUPS listens on localhost:631 by default. From my understanding this is just for the purpose of configuration and management. The content to be printed takes a different route to CUPS. Is this correct? 2. Is it possible to print from a software running in a jail using the CUPS server on the host? How to do that? In case there is something to consider with respect to networkin ..read more

FreeBSD14 VM to forward audio, ... without audio hardware :)

I run FreeBSD in an VM accessed on a windows machine using xrdp. The VM has neither video or audio hardware. For video I use the unaccelerated frame buffer scfb. However how to do the same for audio !!?? Puls audio does not detect audio hardware (Yep there is not any) 2024-02-05 12:40:02.000 pulseaudio[984]: 4 pulseaudio[984]: [(null)] module-detect.c: failed to detect any sound hardware. However it should ... I think ... be possible to emulate some simple audio hardware, so that pulse audio can function and forward sound via xrcp towards the rdp session on the windows machine. Can any one ..read more

Hi, I have FreeBSD installed on virtual private server and has been used bhyve with vm-byhve but the guest os always get terrible network internet speed (avg. in 2 Mbps) than the host (avg. in 1 Gbps). I have tried using debian, alpine, and fedora coreos and it always got terrible network speed. My topologies are using NAT (because I only have 1 public ip address). Code: | Host | | vm-public | | guestos. | | a.b.c.d/24| ----------| 10.100.200.1/24| ------------| 10.100.200.2/24| My guestos configuration file with vm-bhyve is below here Code: lo ..read more

I have been running for some time security/tailscale in a jail environment without a problem.
