Pronominal Suffix: on verb vs. on אֵת

Shalom Binyamin. שלום בנימין I have a question about the use of pronominal suffixes. In biblical Hebrew you can put the pronominal suffix on the particle אֵת, such as אֹתְךָ, אֹתִי, etc. But you can also put them directly onto the verb, eg: יַרְבִּיצֵנִי, יַרְבִּיצְךָ (see Ps 23), etc. I’ve been searching the literature on google scholar for some time now, and I can’t seem to find anything that explains when to use one or the other. Do you know of any particular pattern that can explain when and why ancient Hebrew speakers would choose the pronominal suffix directly on the verb, and when and w ..read more

I should also add, I think a speech bubble can help with some of those ambiguous images. Also, some quizzes probably have too many questions. I will plan on simplifying some of these things, making some quizzes shorter, and dis-ambiguating some of the images. I really do appreciate the feedback. This is an open-access curriculum and thus will have some things to work out initially. Feedback is very beneficial for future users. So thank you ..read more

So many errors – I’m new here, but the images don’t go with many of the answers half the time on the first 2-3 biblical hebrew lessons.. or they are ambiguous… a guy waving – is that shmi or shalom? it’s shmi.. weird.. ok. a name tag that says “שמי” – is it “shmi? no it’s shalom.. etc… I’m here because i have a friend asking to learn hebrew and i wanted to see what kind of lessons you have… i like what you’re doing, but so far, i’m underwhelmed ..read more

I just signed on to the Hebrew class and the discussion site today. I was going through the archives of the emails to get some idea who else was participating and saw that some months ago people were asked to say something about their background and interests, so I thought I would respond accordingly. My name is James W. Campbell. I live in North Haven, Connecticut. I am a retired minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. My wife and I attend Westminster OPC in Hamden, Ct, were I served as Teacher for thirty years. I did my B.A. at the University of Connecticut, my B.D. at Yale, a Th.M. at ..read more

I notice that as new member of the group, I may have brought some confusion, since two of us are identified as “James..” I’ll be glad to change mine to included middle and last initials to avoid any last of clarity as to who is out there. So, when I figure out how to make that adjustment, I’ll be JamesWC ..read more

I enrolled in the class today and I’m facing similar problems with the quizzes. For example, I’m unclear how to proceed with the ones that require items to be placed in sequence. Also, is there a page on the site with a general introduction to the quizzes? I’ve been at it for a couple of hours and I can see that both the philosophy behind the program and the practical goals are worthy of my time, but the frustration that comes from not being clear which is expected is unfortunate ..read more

yišlam lē-kumu ???????? (I think), What is the best text on Ugaritic available nowadays? I have Stanislav Segert‘s grammar below. But it was published in 1984. Is it still considered up to date and relevant, or is there another text I should get to supplement it? Segert, Stanislav. _A Basic Grammar of the Ugaritic Language: With Selected Texts and Glossary_. Berkeley, Los Angeles, and London, University of California Press, 1984. Thanks in advance, Ben ..read more
